why is firefox called "bon echo"?

I guess this a newb question, but When I am closing firefox, It asks me if  im sure I want to close "bon echo". What is "bon echo"? is that the code name for firefox 2.0 or something? I am quite confused...

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

'be' is the new codename for the fx devel 2.0 tree ... there is also minefield for the 3.0 tree, .. i assume it still has the codename in cos it's been built from cvs/svn rather than a repackage of the official distro for Mozilla...

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

Mozilla has really strict branding issues regarding what can and can't call itself "Firefox". If Mozilla stopped caring about what was called Firefox and what wasn't, and it got custom patches and distributed that way without Mozilla knowing about it, it could contain bad stuff.  That would reflect bad on Firefox and Mozilla as a whole.  So they say, Call it Bon Echo or something else and if that happens it doesn't reflect badly.

I'm probably off a little here, but I believe that's the just of it.  I'd prolly do the same thing in their shoes. I know in other distros, there is a flag you can edit to turn the branding of "Bon Echo" off, however I'm unsure if this can be done in ABS or not. I've not ventured into it deep enough.

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

I think, Arch Linux should also offer a normal version of Mozilla Firefox again. It is confusing that the package 'firefox' installs 'Bon Echo' instead of the real 'Firefox'. The least that could be done is to call this package 'bonecho' or something similar.

A good overview of the situation can be found here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … ht=firefox

It does: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=0&SeB=nd

Also Bon Echo can be 100% the same code as Firefox, compiled without --enable-official-branding. In the case of Arch it isn't because of the patches we apply to it. Changing the package name to Firefox would cause a world of grief for newcomers that have to keep track of by which name does each distro call Firefox.

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

Is there a way to rebrand our own Bon Echo back to to firefox?  I've tried loading the extensions "Firesomething" and "Rebrand" to do this, but neither are compatible with v2.0.  Any other way to do this?

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

So, basically, I can't do it, as I have no desire at the moment to learn how to repackage or recompile firefox with the branding parameter.

I just really hate the name "Bon Echo".  I would even prefer Iceweasel over it.

Whatever, I guess I can learn to like Bon Echo.  Either that or wait until the Fireseomething extension works again.

EDIT:  I found someone that has cludged the firesomething extension to work with 2.0 at this site:

http://shorty114.net/2006/07/firesomething-update

Just install that and clear all the words, only specify "Fire" and "Fox".  Voila, firefox is back!

How is bon echo confusing? The package is called firefox, the binary is called firefox.. the browser looks and behaves all like firefox..

Yes, it's just a name.

But if you are like me and you don't like seeing Bon Echo in the tittle bar, use the link I mentioned above and it's fixed.

It also causes some issues on websites (such as the new Yahoo! Mail) that end up thinking you're using an invalid or old version of Firefox when you log on to their site.

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

Yeah the user agent really sucks in saying BonEcho. It nauses my online banking up. Is there no way you could change the user agent to say Firefox instead of BonEcho?

(No I don't mean using 'user agent switcher', I mean changing the actual default user agent in the build)

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

Open with Firefox (oh, I mean Bon Echo) the following address: "about:config"

Type in the Filter bar: useragent
Look for: general.useragent.extra.firefox

Replace "BonEcho" with "Firefox".

Enjoy wink

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

You could just add the line 'ac_add_options --enable-official-branding' without the quotes to the file mozconfig and then use makepkg to rebuild firefox. On my Arch64 machine it takes only a short while to rebuild and then all is well again.

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

well i don't think it's allowed for pkg in the repo because the fx pkg there is patched, and is thus unofficial.

Yep, the Mozilla people have been regular ass^s lately about people distributing patches version of firefox. So, Arch has decided to go with the patched, non-official "Bon Echo" instead. Nothing says you can't build a version for personal use with all the branding enabled, though.

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

No need to recompile! Besides the trick with the useragent in about:config, you can also use this
simple hack to change the branding name. Simply save the script and make it executable
(with chmod a+x mozrebrand, assuming you name it so). Then run it as
sudo mozrebrand <NewName>
where <NewName> is anything you like, such as IceWeasel, Feuerfuchs, GatoRosso, RenardBleu ... smile

#!/bin/bash
# change the "Bon Echo" branding of firefox to something more sexy

cd /usr/lib/firefox/chrome
unzip -q en-US.jar locale/branding/brand.*
sed -i "s/Bon Echo/$1/" locale/branding/brand.*
zip -q -0 -u en-US.jar locale/branding/brand.*
rm -rf locale/
echo "done"

Edit: changed the path to reflect move from /opt to /usr

Re: why is firefox called "bon echo"?

Add to the firefox-2.0.0.10 PKGBUILD, before the make -f line:

echo "ac_add_options --enable-official-branding" >> ${startdir}/src/mozilla/.mozconfig
./configure || return 1
