ATi drivers problem

Hello

I"ve installed the official ATi drivers (downloaded on ati.com)
And configured my xorg.conf.
If i enter "startx"
I only get some black screens, after that i must reboot (can't restart x-server, and control+c doesn't work)

GPU = ATi RADEON X1600 Pro

Also, get rid of the Load "fglrx" bit in your drivers section - that's not necessary.

But yes, install fglrx and fglrx-utils - you'll probably have to remove the ati-downloaded versions first, they install an uninstall script somewhere on your system that you can use, but I forget where.

If you're still having problems, you can look for lines with (EE) or (WW) in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

OK, the uninstall script was in /usr/share/ati

I did pacman -S fglrx and pacman -S fglrx-utils

You need to make sure you install the package xterm if you want to start X with startx, else it won't work. This may be the cause of your black screens.

That means generation of the xorg.conf file likely failed, since the config utility crashed pretty hard there.

You can take the file created by hwd or Xorg -configure and change your video driver to 'fglrx'.

If you're still getting black screens, /var/log/Xorg.0.log might help.

And i maded a new xorg.conf with hwd -xa
and changed vesa to fglrx

But it don't work

If I were you, and assuming you grabbed the fglrx package, I'd rename xorg.conf to something else... then run:
# hwd -x
then copy the generated file to xorg.conf:
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.hwd /etc/X11/xorg.conf
then run aticonfig which will add all the necessary lines to your new xorg.conf
# aticonfig --initial
then add 'fglrx' to your MODULES in /etc/rc.conf
reboot and you should be fine

And to fix that, you have to comment out these lines:
- Load "dri"
- Section "dri"
       Mode 0666
  EndSection

You don't need to do an aticonfig --initial. Just install the driver and utils, use it in the xorg.conf-file and modprobe should be enough.
