[SOLVED!] Sound broken...

I just turned on my computer to find that the sound broke. I haven't changed anything to do with sound recently. Can someone help me fix this? My card is a:

03:02.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Audigy (rev 04)

EDIT: It seems that it is arts (KDE sound system) that is broken. Amarok appears to play fine. And so does just about everything else. So it's not alsa. I tried reinstalling arts but that has done nothing. There is nothing wrong with my configuration because all other users are broken as well. Help!

EDIT2: Splashy was the problem. I removed it to find it working again! All fine now smile

Re: [SOLVED!] Sound broken...

You should give more information. What's different all of sudden? Give us dmesg-output and so on. Your request must remain unanswered in the current state.

Actually, I did change my rc.conf to autoload modules. After a reboot it was still working. I tried loading the module for my sound card (again?) but it didn't work.

Also when KDE starts, an error box comes up saying:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Amarok appears to play fine...maybe it's KDE?

Re: [SOLVED!] Sound broken...

Like I said, Amarok plays fine...it's just KDE's sound notifications.

EDIT: Also, other users are getting the same error...

Re: [SOLVED!] Sound broken...

Are you running the most current Arch (2007.08, or perhaps you are just current with the rolling release)?

I have just installed it myself a few weeks ago, and I have this same problem erratically. Sound just goes away. It is working when I turn the machine off, and the next day, it isn't there any more. I haven't determined the trigger for this behavior yet, but when it happens, I find if I just "start from scratch"  I can get sound back.

To "start from scratch", su to root, run alsaconf, let it do its thing and then reboot. Generally, this brings sound back. On one or two occasions, I have had to repeat this cycle twice to get sound back.

I have been starting to think that changes to rc.conf seem to trigger this, but I haven't confirmed that yet. I can say for sure that when I am just "using" Arch, as opposed to configuring, adding software and so on, I don't get the problem. It is only during periods of system churn that this seems to crop up.

I know that this isn't MUCH help, but at least you know that you are not alone, and at least you know that rerunning alsaconf should get you back "on the air".

Re: [SOLVED!] Sound broken...
