gnome hurts my eyes :( [SOLVED]

Hi smile
I have installed gnome but it hurts my eyes, i think its because i have a laptop with widescreen resolution, but i can't change the resolution to 1280x800, i try to put that mode in xorg.conf but it says its an error or something, any help??
thanks wink

P.S. fonts also look crappy, but maybe because of screen resolution.
P.S. I have ati mobility X1400 and i'm using vesa driver, i tryed to fglrx but after the install the module ipw3945 was gone :S how can i install fglrx without that to happen??
cya

Re: gnome hurts my eyes :( [SOLVED]

I Think you mean a 1280x800 resolution wink
Make sure DPMS is set to true for your monitor.

Do you have fglrx set in your rc.conf modules line?

Re: gnome hurts my eyes :( [SOLVED]

I believe you have to enable subpixel antialiasing in font preferences for your fonts to look right in a lcd monitor.

yes, i meant 1280 tongue
DPMS is true! I'm using gutsy's live-cd xorg.conf.
I don't have there fglrx, i had to reinstall arch because fglrx messed it up lol

Phrodo_00, i'll try to do that!

Thanks all smile

Another thing, install libxft-lcd and cairo-lcd, it makes subpixel hinting look a lot better (well, that's my subjective opinion at least) they're both in the community repo.

Linteg, those conflict with 'libxft' and 'cairo'.
Thanks

I forgot in gnome 2.20 the font preferencies got merged into the appearence-properties, under system->preferences->appearence->fonts (or something like that I'm translating back to english from spanish here so the names might not be exact), make sure to check out the details.

Re: gnome hurts my eyes :( [SOLVED]

hmm, i new i've seen those before big_smile when i go to arch i'll check it out, thanks smile
I changed the xorg.conf resolution properly (it think, at least no errors), but it doesn't really change in gnome i think, in that screen manager it's always 1024*768 and with 81 hz or something, in ubuntu i have only 60 hz, and 1280*800, i don't know why it doesn't work in arch sad
Thanks

Re: gnome hurts my eyes :( [SOLVED]

@Eviltelm: does your hardware use the Intel GMA945/950/965 chipset? If it does, you might need the 915resolution package in extra/915resolution.

Just a thought.

man pacman smile

Use pacman -R to remove those packages, then install the -lcd ones. And look into the -d and -f switches, these will bypass any dependency checks.

I higly recommend libxft-lcd and cairo-lcd, it's a world of difference.

Re: gnome hurts my eyes :( [SOLVED]

pacman -Sy fglrx
aticonfig --initial
add the "fglrx" module to the modules array in /etc/rc.conf
reboot
Work smile
