Re: The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2006 LnF Awards

@stonecrest, installed mplayer-plugin and plugins are there in /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins, but they are still not playing. Since I had instaled firefox 2, thinking that it looks for plugin in its own directory, I copied the plugins from /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins to /opt/mozilla/lib/firefox-2/plugins, but still nothing is working, neither firefox nor opera is able to play songs from websites.

Re: The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2006 LnF Awards

the newest mplayer-plugin is broken(or atleast for me, and it seems that it is so for you aswell...). I don't know at which version it stopped working or if it does work with some combination of X prog/lib which i/arch have masterfully dodged but mplayer 3.17(opera-mplayerplugin in AUR) works for me on the plugger testing grounds(no i'm not using plugger if you wondered): http://fredrik.hubbe.net/plugger/test.html with opera 9.02 build 434 and firefox 2.0 after having:

sudo cp /usr/lib/opera/plugins/mplayerplug-in* /opt/mozilla/lib/plugins/

Diagram software: Dia

Nice for UML, flowcharts, diagrams, etc.

I personally don't consider this software heavy, but I also don't know many competitors (other then Visio).

Surprisingly enough, I think Firefox 2.0 has made it into the "Light" category. Only 12 MB!

(Doesn't quite fit into "fast" yet though, I'll see if that gets improved...)

4. Real player. Again, real is not there in the repos, but its an absolute necessity to play songs online in sites like www.raaga.com or www.musicindiaonline.com. Is there any alternative to it?

1st site asks for "hxplay or realplay in the system path to use as an embedded player"
I used to listen watch streaming on the web but never have had this request before

Galculator

My vote is for galculator. It is faster than gcalctool which certainly has more functions that galculator. genius is really great command like calculator but you need to remember the commands and also it gives fractions rather than decimals when dividing.another tool listed in repos called speedcrunch, but i could not run this neither on terminal nor in "run program" box. It also did not appear on desktop menu.

Emelfm2

As previously suggested, I'll go with emelfm2 for a file manager. This is a very fast, 2 pane, gtk2 file manager. Highly configurable and can easily bounce from 1 pane to 2 panes. Some dual panes will not let you hide the second pane entirely. There's a command line bar. And did I mention, highly configurable. I moved from XFE which would be my runner up. Emelfm2 opens a tad faster than XFE.

funny, as this was the same step i made about 2 years ago wink

now i'm all xfce4-svn with thunar and the only thing i still miss since i switched from filer to thunar is dual pane view. i still really hope benedikt will implement it eventually.

@ravisghosh

the app/bin isn't called speedcrunch, it's called simply crunch ...

[root@athlin ~]# p -Ql speedcrunch | grep bin/
speedcrunch /opt/qt/bin/
speedcrunch /opt/qt/bin/crunch

Yeah, I'm always a bit slow,  big_smile Once I started using bookmarks I found the tree view wasn't as important to me. I guess that's why I changed to emelfm2 from xfe.

Re: The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2006 LnF Awards

This is actually why i came back to arch  after installing ubuntu for about.. 2 hours.  I want only gtk1/2 apps, preferably all 1 because i need functionality not eyecandy.  Less resources the better, but i still havent got this working perfect yet.
So please recomend some stuff if im missing anything good.

WM - EvilWM
Browser - elinks and firefox ( wish i could use kahzahzke but the history doesnt delete )
keybindings - Xbindkeys
Editors - nano or leafpad ( anything lighter then leafpad but still have a gui?)
Music Players - MPD/NCMPC
FileManager - MC or TuxCMD
Torrent - Rtorrent

I check my email from a web interface currently because i cant figure out mutt.  The documentation was a bit over my head.
I use urxvt as my terminal beacuse it looks the best, but is their anything that looks clean but uses less resources?  I tend to have one open for browsing, one open for music, one open for htop and one open for rtorrent.

Re: The Best Light and Fast Applications - 2006 LnF Awards

It would be nice to have a LnF for 2007.

I fear it would be full of DWM/xmonad/awesome spam though.
