I am not asking for when, but how?
Will there be a fork? If you have KDE3 installed it will continue to get updates while KDE4 will only be installed by command? Or will KDE3 automagically update to KDE4 when it becomes available?
Just curious

Just based on similar past updates and Arch's general philosophy of providing the "latest stable packages" I'm sure KDE4 will simply replace KDE3. It will probably sit in testing for a little while, though.

Funkyou from KDEmod was talking about maintaining 3.5.x for KDEmod until around KDE 4.1 or 4.2. If this is still correct, you can stick with KDE 3.5.x for a while.

From what I've read, kde3 apps will be incompatible with kde4 and require new versions, so kde3 compatibility maybe important for some people for a good while yet, particularly as some packages may never get updated.

kde3 apps are qt3 based while kde4 are qt4. This does not mean they're incompatible, just that you'll need both libraries to work untill all the apps you need get ported to the new qt.
For example, kdepim apps probably won't be launched officially untill kde 4.1/4.2

Thats true. I will not replace my KDE3 Desktop until KDE4 is on-par with it, and this will take some time, and Dunkelstern will probably do the same...
However, we have also a KDEmod4 testbuild ready, and the best thing is: You can freely choose which apps you want from KDE3 and which from KDE4. If you run KDE4 and want kopete from KDE3, just uninstall kopete4 and install kopete3, everything else will be handled automatically. It also works the other way around, but then you have to create menu entries for yourself...
want a modular and tweaked KDE for arch? try kdemod
