I'm having some problem with the video output these days... Because of the problem I had with nvidia's latest driver in testing (169.07) I downgraded it to the one in extra.. Now everything works fine except that the video playback is very dark.. With respect to X11 video output, it's a lot darker, even sometimes I can't see what's played on the screen.. I don't how to set or play with XV's output settings but this problem is really annoying..
Any suggestions please ?

This always used to happen for me when I had a CRT monitor. If you are not running the X composite extension then the brightness/contrast/hue controls of the video player should work. If you are running the X composite extension then, as far as I am aware, you will be out of luck if you stick to XV.
There is at least one thread in this forum that discusses the problem - search for "composite xv brightness" - and there is useful information at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … +bug/34659. Oh, and don't forget to run nvidia-settings and check for anything unusual in the X Server Color Correction tab.

Removing all composite extension lines and A*RGB*Visuals settings from xorg.conf did the trick.... Amazing.. Thanks..
