VLC Problem

I just cant run vlc....
Any ideas

[matyas@sanmartin ~]$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.6d Janus
The program '.' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 198 error_code 11 request_code 148 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Re: VLC Problem

What video driver are you using?  I can remember having similar problems with xf86-video-intel and needing to revert to xf86-video-i810.

Also, did you get the error message right away or when you started to play the video?  What video output module are you using?

Same here with aMule:

[paolo@liberty ~]$ amule

No other instances are running.
The program 'amule' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

The problems has been reported on many other Linux distributions (see for example here), and is related to the new xorg-server.
In fact, it arises after an update to the current xorg-server-1.4.0.90-4 package.

Maybe it wasn't a smart choice to release that update so soon...

What's your xorg-server and libxfont version? Did you upgrade to the latest in the core repo (libxfont-1.3.1-2, xorg-server-1.4.0.90-4)?

Could you please try to run aMule, or filezilla or any other wxWidgets if you have any installed?

edit: something is broke that's for sure. if I just add the server automatically and connect to it I can use aMule without anything happening. I am completely confused now. vlc is still broke, same as before no video even on newly downloaded files. Audio seems to work.

Re: VLC Problem

Same here, running FX 5200. I upgraded xorg, I run VLC to watch some 720p movies that wouldn't play smooth on mplayer, then after reboot (Hence loading the new xorg-server) I can no longer run vlc... going to downgrade now.

EDIT: Everything is fine after downgrade of xorg-server.

Re: VLC Problem

@zyghom: you've done it this way?:

pacman -Rd xorg-server
pacman -U path-to-your-1.4.90-3-package

+ xorg-server restart?

Re: VLC Problem

That URL is the fix for this bug. Another workaround is to put this in xorg.conf:

Section "Extensions"
Option "MIT-SHM" "no"
EndSection

This will disable the offended feature, though fixing the offended feature is better for performance than disabling it.

(taken from FS#9254)
this solves the problem but disabling something smile

The workaround works for me too. Is it the best way though? Better than downgrading?
