Newly installed Arch has no sound. Followed the directions in the wiki and even tried alsaconf and still no luck. What else can i try?
Thanks!

What's your sound hardware?
lspci | grep Audio
What's the output of:
lsmod
Did you take heed of this line here:
NEVER use alsaconf if you have a PCI or ISAPNP sound card, as the entries alsaconf adds to the modprobe.conf file might break udev's autodetection.
If you do in fact have one of the said sound cards it might be a little more difficult to fix this problem (but should be fixable).
What have you installed so far, what have you put into /etc/rc.conf and what commands have you tried?

I have installed - alsa-utils (do you want to know what other programs i have installed such as OpenOffice and Firefox, or do you mean just having to do with sound?)
Thanks

Hmm, you seem to have the right modules running and the sound card is detected.
Hmm maybe alsa hasn't been started yet. Put 'alsa' in the DAEMONS line in /etc/rc.conf and do:
/etc/rc.d/alsa start
Then run 'alsamixer' to unmute channels and crank the volume up.
Because you ran alsaconf when you actually have a PCI card, you'll want to edit /etc/modprobe.conf and remove anything relating to sound in there. On a default install it's usually empty anyway so unless you've edited it manually then you can delete stuff in there fairly safely.
Hope you can get it working, welcome to arch

I checked and i already had alsa running in the Daemons line of my rc.conf. I tried to start alsa again and play some music but it still doesnt work. Any other ideas??

I can't remember if I had some problems with Arch or another distro but I remember that I had something like you.
I started alsamixer and turned off the external amplifier. I would try to switch on/off that option.
If it doesn't work try with the other (I did't have a look at the wiki, perhaps you alreadey tried). Are the options from "Master M" to
"Mic" switched on ?

Also experiencing sound problems, sound went on vacation after a "pacman -Syu" and hasn't been heard of lately.

[2008-04-10 07:30] IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ENCRYPTION USERS
[2008-04-10 07:30]
[2008-04-10 07:30] The "password" column in /etc/crypttab has now
[2008-04-10 07:30] two special keywords:
[2008-04-10 07:30] - ASK ask for a passphrase on boot
[2008-04-10 07:30] - SWAP use a random key and create swapspace
[2008-04-10 07:30] This is particularly dangerous, as the
[2008-04-10 07:30] volume in question will be overwritten
[2008-04-10 07:30] If you use SWAP as your passphrase (which
[2008-04-10 07:30] is insecure anyway), be sure to remove it
[2008-04-10 07:30] from /etc/crypttab to avoid dataloss!
[2008-04-10 07:30]

[2008-04-10 07:31] http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Perl_Policy).
[2008-04-10 07:31]
[2008-04-10 07:31] - The perl package and its modules install in the core_perl directories
[2008-04-10 07:31] - Perl modules provided by Arch Linux install in vendor_perl directories
[2008-04-10 07:31] - CPAN/CPANPLUS installs should be placed in site_perl directories
[2008-04-10 07:31] - Older modules in the 'current' directory should still work
[2008-04-10 07:31] - Programs with embedded perl interpreters need to be rebuilt
[2008-04-10 07:31]
[2008-04-10 07:31] Users of the CPAN or CPANPLUS shells should modify the configuration
[2008-04-10 07:31] to use the site_perl directories. Under the CPAN shell use:
[2008-04-10 07:31] o conf makepl_arg INSTALLDIRS=site
[2008-04-10 07:31] o conf mbuildpl_arg installdirs=site
[2008-04-10 07:31] Under the CPANPLUS shell:
[2008-04-10 07:31] s conf buildflags installdirs=site
[2008-04-10 07:31] s conf makemakerflags INSTALLDIRS=site
[2008-04-10 07:31] Then save the configuration.

Hi
I too have sound issues after a recent upgrade. I have opened a new post but no body has replied to it, so I thought I might try here.
Here is the output of lspci | grep Audio: -

Here is the last part of /var/log/pacman.log which shows gstreamer updates. After the update is when I had issues: -

Anybody Have any ideas on this? Please as it is getting to be a pain... can't play any mp3's

I don't have any concrete idea, but my intuition says there must be something with the decoders, for I can hear the beep in the console, but not a song played.

Do you have any errors when you run alsamixer?
Can root play sound?
For me root can run alsamixer no problems, and sound plays through fine from apps ran by root.
I'm having sound issues with my regular user. Running alsamixer gives me the following error:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory
And editing ~/.asoundrc per the wiki changes the error to:
ALSA lib conf.c:1589:(snd_config_load1) _toplevel_:23:12:Unexpected char
ALSA lib conf.c:2850:(snd_config_hook_load) /home/brandon/.asoundrc may be old or corrupted: consider to remove or fix it
ALSA lib conf.c:2714:(snd_config_hooks_call) function snd_config_hook_load returned error: Invalid argument
ALSA lib conf.c:3079:(snd_config_update_r) hooks failed, removing configuration
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: Invalid argument
My regular user is in the audio group so I'm not sure what the deal is. This seems more serious than a permissions problem...

Doh,
My problem was simple. I just never relogged my user after adding him to the audio group with
# gpasswd -a USERNAME audio

Hmmm... I have symptoms similar to arjan, I can hear the system beep but I don't have any sound. The volume control Icon in Gnome has a red box with a white cross in it, yet if I type alsamixer in bash it comes up with no issues, so I don't think it is permission issue. I think that somehow it is linked to the gstreamer upgrade that came down last Friday (11 April).

Anybody have an idea's? As this is really starting to bug me now. How would I go about removing alsa and gstreamer as they seem to have a lot of dependencies. I have installed XFCE4, I might boot to this and see if it effects that or is it just local to Gnome.
Cheers
EmyrB
Edit: Same issues with XFCE I'm afraid. Can anyone help with this as I am now stumped

OK I have reinstalled Arch to resolve my sound issues. I have placed alsa in my deamons and I have added myself to the audio group. I can log in to Gnome and unmute everything and set the required levels, but when I log out, reboot or shutdown and then go back into Arch, I have to unmute everything and set the sound levels again. Any ideas?

It's a bit late (2 months) and I haven't followed the whole thread. But your last post sounds like you need to use "alsactl store" once you have the sound levels as you need them and then have an "alsactl restore" every time you boot. I have included mine in rc.local, don't know if this is the best solution, but it works.
