Why is there always a delay in alsa?
When I run aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center, I hear the lady say "nt, Center!"
When I run aplay =R 100 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center, I hear the lady say "Front, Center!"
Is there a way I can fix this?

I've got (IIRC) the same. Didn't care. If you want realtime sound, use jack.

Does anyone know how I would do this? Or a fix for alsa?

The bug is really annoying, expecially when single sounds event are played (for example when receiving / sending messages in Pidgin).

why don't you upgrade to the newest alsa ? it works perfectly, I had same problem
alsa-lib 1.0.17-1
alsa-utils 1.0.17-1
use abs, change ver to 17 and that is all

Thank you zyghom. I just didin't think it was a problem of alsa, because with other distros the 1.0.16 worked fine and had not this problem.
Anyway... [SOLVED]!

When I try to compile it from the abs, it notes the 1.0.16 package and won't let me install. I cant remove alsa, because so many programs depend on it. Any answers to that quandry?

For future reference, pacman has an option to skip dependencies, which is especially handy for situations like this, when you're going to install a newer version
pacman -Rd pkgname
