The wiki page for awesome is for awesome 2 version and is a bit outdated. So i have created a new page at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Awesome3 . Please feel free to point out any errors.
And please contribute liberally to the tips n tricks section and post a link to your awesome configuration files :-).....

Hi!
Great article, though I had updated the old article.
I'm not good at writing wiki articles, but I've got some information you could probably add for the Transparency Section:
1.: you'll need transset as well to get window transparency
2.: you can set this window transparency dynamically in the rc.lua (I guess that's what you meant with 'rc.lua-tweaks'):
add
c.opacity = 1
to the awful.hooks.focus.register hook (to restore Visibility)
add
c.opacity = 0.4
to the awful.hooks.unfocus.register hook (to make the Window transparent. Adjust value as comfortable)
3.: Personally I think there's too much information on xcompmgr in this section (especially or something like xcompmgr -cfF -t5 -l5 -r4.2 -o.55 & ). If anybody wants advanced Information, they may look in the article. But decide yourself.
That's about it for the moment. Thanks again for the article. There were also some things that I didn't know (naughty). Keep up the good work.

Just in case any other thinkpad-without-win-key users are reading this, do any of you use a different modkey besides alt?
I can't really think of any good substitutes, so I've just stuck with alt even though it's starting to bug me more and more, especially in vim. Fn is pretty much the only other plausible option I've been able to picture.

what about using capslock as modkey? do you need it?

Wouldn't using that, uh, keep turning caps lock on and off?
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

That's easily disabled.
I'd vote for Mod1 though, cause I'm a dwm'r

archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

For the most part mod1 has worked well for me, but I'm so used to using alt to hotswap out of vim-insert that it's been bugging me more and more. I might try out caps for a bit and if caps/Fn don't work out, then I'll probably ditch tilings on my laptop until I get a new one down the line.

It might also be a good idea to have a section of user-contributed rc.lua files, etc...I know when I started using awesome 3 I had hell getting it set up the way I had awesome 2. By the way, Eee PC + Awesome is the way to go.

Done :-)
it would be better to update the existing wiki page.
I thought awesome2 was still supported .Any way we can rename the old page to awesome2 and the new one as awesome once its done.
@ everybody else
Please contribute any rc.lua tweaks that you have done. It will be a great help for all of us who are not lua experts :-)

I updated awesome in community to awesome3 with the cairo move last week. Not sure if it awesome2 is still maintained upstream though.
The awesome2/awesome naming scheme you described above would indeed be the best if we want to keep both articles.

To map Modkey-b to hide/show default statusbar on active screen (as default in awesome 2.3), add to your awesome/rc.lua:
keybinding.new({ modkey }, "b", function ()
if mystatusbar[mouse.screen].screen == nil then
mystatusbar[mouse.screen].screen = mouse.screen
else
mystatusbar[mouse.screen].screen = nil
end
end):add()
Do not forget replace mystatusbar with the name of your statusbar

+1, I'm running it on my 900A wouldn't change a thing. Arch+Awesome should come stock .

<MUHUAHAHAHA> We are on the Arch Newsletter. One step closer to arch domination </evil grin>
And a few updates...
Awesome now has pseudo transparency. As gigamo pointed out on the wiki
As of Awesome 3.1, there is now built-in pseudo transparency for wiboxes. To enable, just add 2 more hexadecimals to the colors in your theme file (~/.config/awesome/themes/default usually), like shown here:
bg_normal = #000000AA
where "AA" is the transparency value.
And there is revelation http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/index. … Revelation which mimics expose and shows all the windows .

It seems doesn't work on my
awesome v3.3.4 (Mercury)
• Build: Sep 9 2009 21:57:37 for i686 by gcc version 4.4.1 (nobody@Miranda)
• D-Bus support: ✔
The xcompmgr way is all right, but it cause some problem with Mplayer.

You can easily remove caps lock from its function with the following line in .Xmodmap:
remove Lock = Caps_Lock
Personally, as i'm switching between ratpoison and awesome on a Thinkpad X40, I've removed the right alt from mod1, and added it to mod4:
remove Mod1 = Alt_R
add Mod4 = Alt_R
This way I have the same modifier key for both of the WMs.
