Downgrading Xorg as last resort

Well, as some people have noted during this late update, the i810 driver is no longer working with intel graphics chips, and the supposed superior Intel driver isn't cutting it for those of us with somewhat "legacy" hardware - if you really wanna call the i855 chipset legacy within a Linux environment.

Hotplugging and whichever new features the latest Xorg brings don't equate to this upgrade being something I'd like to apply given the (incredible) downgrade in performance with the new driver.

Thing is, I'm running on tight space and hadn't the previous xserver packages available in cache anymore. Can anyone provide those packages, or does someone know a slower mirror which still hasn't updated to the new Xserver?

BTW, given the problems with performance most people are eventually gonna have, wouldn't it make sense to have Xserver 1.4 as an option? Or will some kind and gentle soul make it availalbe in the AUR? I know I would surely appreciate it greatly smile

Thanks in advance for anyone's help smile

You can find older packages here, which I'm using until I work out how to get my wacom tablet working correctly.

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

Thanks, mate smile

Somehow the downgrade isn't as clean as I supposed it would be, whenever I try to access glxgears, glxinfo or an app which needs hardware acceleration, the Xserver shuts down.

I guess I'll have to look further into this and then probably try updating the wiki for people with the same kind of problems.

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

I just finished downgrading xorg-xserver because I couldn't take the horrible performance any longer.

I used the repo that whompus listed and pulled the following packages:
intel-dri-7.0.3-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
libdrm-2.3.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
synaptics-0.14.6.99-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz
xf86-input-evdev-2.0.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
hal-0.5.11-4-i686.pkg.tar.gz

I combined these with a version of xorg-server 1.4.2 that I had built a while ago to enable hotplugging.  The result is that I can use my computer again.

Until the intel driver is stable, I'm not budging from this configuration.

EDIT: I also needed to downgrade HAL as well.

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

Great thanks whompus and jwcxz; now I can use my computer again smile
I'll try to upgrade when I would have more free time.

I used:
xf86-video-vesa-1.3.0-6-i686.pkg.tar.gz
xorg-server-1.4.2-2-i686.pkg.tar.gz
from that repo and it works for now.

Thanks again, I was in despair smile

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

Jeez, this one's draining me. I can't downgrade correctly. I tried removing Xorg altogether and installing everything I needed from the link whompus put there, but whenever I try to read the output of glxinfo or test glxgears, X shuts down.

I'm trying to do everything as smoothly as possible, but this one's bugging me way, way, way too much.

Result of glxinfo:

name of display: :0.0
glxinfo: main/context.c:1063: _mesa_initialize_context: Assertion `driverFunctions->NewTextureObject' failed.
Aborted

edit: I finally nailed it, also had to pull libgl-7.0.3-2-i686 from that repo. Now to freeze xorg's updates with pacman... at least until Intel's driver gets a little better. I'm back at 700+ fps for now, and performance overall is way snappier with i810 than it is with intel's driver.

Ah, thanks Onyros.  I forgot to downgrade libgl, too!

Getting ~1000FPS, which is at least decent.

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

I have i810 also and cannot startx after the xorg-server upgrade. I'm fairly new to Arch. Is anyone going to file a bug report?

i810 as a driver or as a chipset? If as a driver, i810 is not available for the latest xorg. Replace it with intel or downgarde everything as suggested above

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

Thanks, I used this list of packages to downgrade, though I still had the packages in my cache, and didn't need the repository.  I did this remotely, but it looks like it worked, since I can see that X and gdm processes are running in htop.

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

i810 as chipset and driver both. I couldn't downgrade. ("insert package name" not found in local db. and I could not remove a package because of dependency) but that's another story. I didn't look for closed bugs, (it's not a bug) that's why I didn't find it.   smile

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

My wacom is permanently plugged in so cannot talk about hotplugging but upgrading linuxwacom 0.8.2 solved my problems.

Re: Downgrading Xorg as last resort

Has this issue been addressed?  Does the server now support i810?  I've tried both "intel" and "i810" and neither worked until I downgraded.

I tried to upgrade to the very, very newest version (i.e. compile from source).  I proceeded to nearly break my entire system, so I'm still stuck with my downgraded packages.

Darn.  Thanks for the response!

I wonder where I can watch to see if they end  up fixing this problem.  Maybe there is a mailing list that I can nag on.
