Read the HAL entry in the wiki. Also, this is been covered over and over again for days. The solution is posted at least 20 times. Please search for you answers.

sorry for the repeat question
i followed
the hal problem: try modify /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf as root
add the following between <config version="0.1"> and </config>
Code:<match user="$USER">
<match action="org.freedesktop.hal.storage.*">
<return result="yes"/>
</match>
<match action="hal-storage-mount-fixed-extra-options">
<return result="yes" />
</match>
<match action="hal-storage-mount-removable-extra-options">
<return result="yes" />
</match>
</match>where $USER is your username. restart hal.
i hadnt gone down that root cos it had worked up untill now, n i didnt think a config file was causin it! sorry! thanks for the solution!

I need to insist that this is not a solution. It is a workaround. Until you can set a group=users (which didn't work for me), this is still a bug. I am surprised people accept this so easily. If you have multiple users, this is quite a drag...

Multiple users can be defined by adding a bar (|) character in the "match user" element, example:
<match user="user1|user2">
<match action="org.freedesktop.hal.storage.*">
<return result="yes"/>
</match>
<match action="hal-storage-mount-fixed-extra-options">
<return result="yes" />
</match>
<match action="hal-storage-mount-removable-extra-options">
<return result="yes" />
</match>
</match>

This doesn't work at all for me. I've tried everything I can find. No luck.
And yes, the cd entries are commented in fstab.

Now that I uncommented the cd drive lines in fstab, it works perfectly. I confirmed by recommenting them to break it again. I don't know what to say, automounting has been a mess for years.
