it only seems to happen with certain fonts (TTF).

It only happened to me using terminus (set the font in gnome-appearances)

it also happens on some websites... XKCD

Bumped it since i never found a solution (besides switching fonts, but TTF fonts work perfectly on my friends ubuntu install)

Re: Distorted Terminal Fonts?

Do you have manually edited font configuration file in /etc/fonts/ ? If you do, try to comment it.

I had similar problem before in Ubuntu, that was because I had a custom fonts.conf which was not configured properly.

Re: Distorted Terminal Fonts?

*bump*
I've installed Arch on an old computer and I'm getting this too with Terminal in Openbox.
Turning anti-aliasing on in Terminal seems to resolve it but the computer has an old CRT screen which makes anti-aliased text luck a bit blurry (not ideal for working with the console).

Someone has to have an idea of what's causing this and how to fix it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Distorted Terminal Fonts?

If you're using Terminus, why not use the basic fonts instead of TTF? Terminus has a basic font version, and it's faster than TTF too.

xfontsel is good to get a config string, which can go in your Xdefaults.
