Yes, the border/lines is part of the wallpaper.
No, I don't know how to prevent ClockRing nor to get it out of the Alt-Tab-switch, but I don't use "show desktop". btw, thanks for your screen with it.

i have some shades of gray configs up here http://dotfiles.org/~phisphere (.Xdefaults, awesome theme).
and the panel up there is just default panel of awesome 3 window manager.
