[RESOLVED]Password entry at kde login in loop

I installed 64 and 32 bit Arch at the same time.
Now running a normal system in 32 bit.  Can't login to 64 bit system.  Just did a system upgrade to see if that made any difference.  The login failure is the same as prior to the upgrade.
Logging in as user in the 64 bit system seems to respond then returns to login screen.
It is not reported as a password error.  In fact I entered an invalid password and the proper error message came back.
I also tried adding another user and it fails in the same way.
Please give me some advice on debugging this problem.

Thanks,
Bill
