fgfs: error while loading shared libraries: libosgParticle.so.53: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
libosgParticle.so.55 exists in /usr/lib, looks as if fg is looking for .53. I suppose I can start symlinking, but is there another fix/workaround available?

Rebuild flightgear against your current setup and either flag the package in the AUR page or file a bug report in the community section of the bug tracker. A bug report is probably better.

Rebuilding flightgear-1.9.1 against the current system setup did the trick.

Interesting. I tried to rebuild flightgear against my current system, but that didn't seem to work.
All I get is
./fgfs
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: Not able to create requested visual.

Segmentation fault
any hints?
