This is my first arch install. I can ping google, but I can't do anything with pacman. When I use the # pacman -Syu command I get this error:
error: database path is undefined
error: could not register 'core' database (could no pen database)
The only changes I have made were found in the following article:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=63940
I followed this to be able to ping google and it worked. Now I'm stuck

take a look at /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and see if is a mirror uncommented and do pacman -Syyu. if this don't solve the problem, you can post the output of
pacman -Syuv
where -v is verbose

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Also check /etc/pacman.conf what servers your pacman is using.
Sometimes a server can be out of sync so it's good to have a fallback server...
You can also use rankmirrors script (see wiki)

My mirror list was good to go, I commented out archlinux because its throttled, the rest were wide open. I went back and looked through the beginners guide at the Arch Wikki. I partitioned a separate drive for /var, which I think is where the packman data is kept, when I looked into it, there was nothing. I think I bit off more than I could chew with the partitioning shceme. I went through and did a fresh install, with only a swap and root partitions. I ammended my rc.local file as posted above and everything seems to be working. Any thoughts? I'd like to be able to keep /var on a separate hard drive, but I'm running with what I got working now.

Did you add the /var drive to your fstab?
obvious first question...
If you did you might misspelled it or something; it happened to me with Locale I got half working Arch and that was just locale
