I have done a fresh install with this somewhat outdated tutorial just a few minutes ago. I installed it on my EeePC 701. It boots fine and I logged in successfully. The first thing I did was search to install xorg and then setup Gnome or Openbox. But every time I type a command like "pacman -sy" or similar I just get an error like this:
error: could not register 'extra' database (unexpected system error)
I tried "#pacman -sy" and "pacman -syy" and all sorts but I get the same error. I can't do anything with packages! What am I doing wrong? Have I forgotten something? How can I solve this? Thanks.

Hmm.
Not sure. What does your /etc/pacman.conf look like?
Do you have any mirrors enabled in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist?
Madly in love with Arch64, Openbox, DotA, and of course... penguins!
Happy to help if you're not a Help Vampire. Use your wonderful resources like ArchWiki, Google, and our wonderful search page.

You could try using the local mirror (if you aren't already):

Out of space? Read only filesystem? Missing /var/lib/pacman tree?

Sorry for the post delay. I've been down with a mild flu (might go to get tested for "swine" ). I will try and look into all the things you have suggested when I get the chance.
