Same problem here. It results in

$ pdflatex some.tex
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (TeX Live 2009/Arch Linux)
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

Same here.

I tried the suggested

updmap --syncwithtrees

which concluded without error but another

pacman -S texlive-science (for example)

again results in

>>> texlive: updating the fontmap files with updmap...
!!! ERROR! The map file `ams-bsr-interpolated.map' has not been found at all.

 done.

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

I'm found solution:
rm -rf /usr/share/texmf-var/*

P.S. works for me

This didn't do the trick for me...so still unable to use pdftex.

I also tried

sudo fmtutil-sys --all

, but with no success

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

After "sudo fmtutil-sys --all", deleting ~/.texlive and "updmap --syncwithtrees" the error is now

pdfTeX error (font expansion): auto expansion is only possible with scalable fonts.

I'd rather not do that because texmf-var contains files that belong to texlive packages (as e.g. "pacman -Qo /usr/share/texmf-var/arch/installedpkgs/texlive-core.maps" reveals)! It seems to be some sort of bug in the new texlive packages. Perhaps we should file a bug report?

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

I had this behaviour as I updated to testing/texlive-2009 a few weeks ago. Then I could downgrade back to extra/texlive-2008. Texlive-2009 seems to be a rather new package, maybe anyone could point me to a repository that it not synced yet and where you get the old texlive-2008 from?

The Arch Rollback Machine (http://arm.kh.nu/) might do the trick for you. But I'd rather switch to a working new set of packages ...

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

Just try:

fmtutil --all

on the user account (without sudo).

Normally, me too. But at this moment I'd like to finish my thesis soon rathen than to f*** around with a broken package. Thank you for the arm tip.

fmtutil: format directory `/home/blabla/.texlive/texmf-var/web2c' does not exist.

Should it?

Sorry for this offtop, but it didn't work out for me. Am I doing s.th. wrong?
I replaced the Server in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist by

Server = http://arm.kh.nu/$repo::2009-7-11/os/i686/

then I started

sudo pacman -Syy

.
After that

sudo pacman -S extra/texlive-bin

still try to install texlive-2009, although http://arm.kh.nu/extra::2009-7-11/os/i686/ contains the package texlive-bin-2008-5-i686.pkg.tar.gz Where am I missing something?

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

Guys! Facts that you should know about tex(live):
- when you run <something>tex (like pdflatex), the general tex compiler is loaded first (it greets with "This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (TeX Live 2009/Arch Linux)"); then it tries to load a "format" (i.e. a precompiled macros), e.g. latex. When the precompiled binary format is incompatible with the current compiler, you get this message: "Fatal format file error; I'm stymied". This happens when the binary compiler is updated (so e.g. when you update texlive-2008 to texlive-2009).
- what needs to be done in this case is to rebuild the formats, with the appropriate version of the command 'fmtutil --all'.
- there are a couple of locations where the binary formats are located. It's always in 'texmf-var/web2c' directory, but it can be:
    a) the system-wide location (/usr/share/texmf-var/web2c), this gets rebuilt with 'sudo fmtutil-sys --all'
    b) the user location (~/.texlive/texmf-var/web2c), this is if you built the format yourself (or it got build as a user automatically at some point), and this gets rebuilt with 'fmtutil --all' as the appropriate user. This directory might not exist at all, so no worries.

- finally the message 'ERROR! The map file `ams-bsr-interpolated.map' has not been found at all.' has nothing to do with this and it is pretty harmless. You can "fix this" by running the command that's suggested with the message.

Thanks, those little facts are hard to learn, since nobody talks about them. I understand TeX a little better now.

That's all right, but I think the problem is a bit complexer, because of the complexity of texlive. In my case it's metapost that doesn't work any more. I think it was a little premature to put texlive-2009 out from [testing]. Debian testing for axample (even debian unstable) is still coming with texlive-2007.

Yes I know that these things are not so easy to learn, and that's why I was writing it. I was slightly horrified by the long suggestion list of the sorts: "try deleting this! try deleting that! run this and run that as root..." without explanation why, why it's OK to delete some "system" files, etc.

Now arch is known and famous for being bleeding edge - and the result is that these kinds of things come up once in a while. Take it as an opportunity to learn bits and pieces about how things work.

Lastly, I sometimes have to use some derivative of debian, and it's really annoying that the only ship with TL 2007, since most of my computer work is using TeX and 2007 is really too old for some macro packages.

EDIT: Open a new thread about your metapost problem, posting how does it fail to work.

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

Hey guys,

after the texlive update I'm no longer able to compile tex-files. Neither latex nor pdftex work and both stop with the same error message:

! I can't find file `dehypht-x-2008-06-18.tex'.
<to be read again>
                   \relax
l.370   \repeat

(Press Enter to retry, or Control-D to exit)
Please type another input file name:
! Emergency stop.
<to be read again>
                   \relax
l.370   \repeat

!  ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!
Transcript written on pdflatex.log.' instead of a filename.
I can't find the format file `pdflatex.fmt'!

just the last line for latex is different. It says, that the format file 'latex.fmt' cannot be found.
What happend to my TexLive? I've allready tried reinstalling and all the fmtutil stuff from above sad
Has anybody an idea? Thanks

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

Tex can find that file wink
I have that file but with the date '2009-06-19', it is a part of texlive-core package. This error is emitted by tex when it tries to rebuild the pdflatex.fmt (the binary pdflatex format). It contains german hyphenation stuff and it's included by the latex's babel language switching mechanism.  In my case the correct version was included when I was rebuilding the formats.
Anyways, it is weird that you're getting this error. Please let us know whether you modified the language settings in any way, and/or post that 'pdflatex.log' you're obtaining to some pastebin.

Re: texlive-latex3 and other problems in upgrade

I have the 2009-06-19 version of this file, too. But it seems that tex is looking for the old file. I get the same error when trying to rebuild the texfm-var directory with

fmtutil-sys --all

Is there another way to make TexLive recognize the new file? Are there config files I can remove bofore I try another reinstall?

I didn't chance anything in the TexLive distribution, because usually it works out of the box. I can't find any log file, neither for fmtutil-sys nor for any latex/pdflatex try sad
