Okay I just installed Ubuntu's font libraries (freetype2-ubuntu, fontconfig-ubuntu, cairo-ubuntu, libxft-ubuntu) and this is my .fonts.conf
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<match target="font" >
<edit mode="assign" name="rgba" >
<const>rgb</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font" >
<edit mode="assign" name="hinting" >
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font" >
<edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle" >
<const>hintslight</const>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font" >
<edit mode="assign" name="antialias" >
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font">
<edit mode="assign" name="lcdfilter">
<const>lcddefault</const>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
Everything works fine in Firefox, the fonts render pretty much like in Ubuntu. But on other GNOME applications nothings has changed.
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Any help would be appreciated.

But on other GNOME applications nothing has changed.
Restart xorg.
Apps need to be closed & restarted, to use the patched libs and to re-query the fontconfig settings.

Already did that. In fact I already rebooted.

Could you post a list of all the files/symlinks in your /etc/fonts/conf.d/ ?

Here it is.

Have you tried starting up X without a .fonts.conf? I found that on my system everything looked better after I just deleted .fonts.conf and started up without it. I'm using the -ubuntu font packages from AUR, as well.

Looks to me like the subpixel smoothing isn't applied. Try symlinking /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-subpixel-rgb.conf to /etc/fonts/conf.d/
Offline
this is my ~/.fonts.conf
Try mine.

Maybe it's just me but I can't even tell a difference between those two screenshots...

can't even tell a difference
Then your monitor sucks, or it isn't an *LCD* monitor
The "File Edit View" on the right is much crisper, i.e. not so blurred.

Yes this monitor does suck (not mine, at work, paid for by the taxpayers )

I hope you don't mind but i added that to the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … _very_good

Fine by me.
What I *do* mind is when people get the filename wrong, for the millionth-zillionth time
It's ~/.fonts.conf

Just checked it and it says fonts.conf so that wasn't wrong (or you fixed it on the wiki)
edit: yes, you edited it. sorry for the wrong filename.

On what fonts/packages it relies on?

Look at the "Installation order" line in the PKGBUILD for cairo-ubuntu.

So, I install the depencies on my Debian box and then just override my .fonts.conf with yours?
