Chakra

So, what do you guys think about the Chakra Project?

I've been having some KDE issues in Arch that I didn't have in Fedora, so I decided to give this a shot. Torrenting the ISO now.

I'm curious about your experiences with Chakra and KDEmod. Do you think it's the greatest thing since pre-baked taco shells or a grievous blaspheme of Arch Linux and The Arch Way?

I'll update with my take on it when I've tested it.

Re: Chakra

I haven't tried Chakra but I have used kdemod and it is quite brilliant. Definitely recommended.

Re: Chakra

The installer is beautiful, haven't got it to install all the way.  Still very ALPHA.  Like someone said, would be better to do Arch Core + KDEmod.  I tried this but had some problems with Kmail and Kopete not using Kwallet well and kvpnc not working as espected.

Re: Chakra

I think it's an interesting experiment, putting a user-friendly polish onto a bleeding-edge rolling KISS distro wink

I wish them luck though.

Re: Chakra

I couldn't even get it to boot.

Then again, I haven't had very good luck with Linux on this laptop. The only distro I got to work was Fedora.

Re: Chakra

I think the package manager, Shaman is just awesome. It's probably the nicest and most complete GUI pacman frontend.

Was shaman written for the Chakra Project?

Written by the same people, current only relies on Qt, so even non-KDE people can use it.  I believe in the future it may need KDE libs.

Re: Chakra

Chakra x64 forgot to install the initcpio image hmm

After I manually put it in it worked great! Still very alpha though.

Re: Chakra

I just tried out the alpha 3 live cd (which came out today) and I am astounded! I can't believe how good it is at such an early stage of development. I had 3D support for my ATI 4830 without even having to lift a finger. I was also hit by how absolutely gorgeous KDE has become. It definitely looks better than Windows and OS X in my opinion. I don't know how the KDE devs managed to strike such a perfect balance between modernity and simplicity. They must be incredibly talented people. It's scary to think how good both Chakra and KDE are going to be in a year or two. The linux desktop has a very bright future ahead of it in my opinion.

I agree. Very polished for an alpha. I'll wait until the final version is released before doing a hdd install.

Re: Chakra

I love it, I found it about a year or so ago but didnt really use it much since it used kde 4 and I still wasnt liking kde 4 at that time so I stuck with kdemod 3.5 and arch, but still checked back on the project from time to time. Once kde 4 became usable (IMO) in 4.3 I tried the latest chakra release and loved it, Im actually using it now big_smile I was amazed at how fast it was the last time (most recent aka this install) I installed it, especially combined with ext4 compared to when I was using JFS when they were still ironing out the bugs with ext4. A stock install booted in about 25 seconds, doing a few tweaks Ive knocked it down to 15 seconds.

I install their new builds occasionally to see how they are. I should check out alpha three soon considering that Im on the 09172009 pre-release, I think I can upgrade to alpha 3 with out reinstalling...

doesn't the "alpha 3" refer to the installer? how do you "upgrade" to it?
After all, chakra is actually an arch linux after installation, only with extra package repos. so it is rolling release and you can't "upgrade" to a new version of "chakra"

(if you really like reinstalling your system, you can of course reinstall it with the new iso big_smile I'm sure, the chakra devs appreciate the testing)

cheers

Re: Chakra

Yea I think your correct, I just asked over there if there were any changes other than tribe between the pre-release im using (090908 minimal) and alpha 3, I think they add small things in to chakra that you wouldnt get if you just installed kdemod ontop of arch, for example I just read that dario (drf on their forums, hes one of the devs) got plymouth working with chakra and theyre going to eventually add it in to the live cd. So I dont know if its truely possible to upgrade from a pre-release to a release since like you said it a rolling release cycle.

Re: Chakra

IMHO, KDEmod is and has always been the BEST KDE in all Linux distros. I've followed KDEmod from its beginning, as a Gentoo mod for KDE 3. Later, when KDEmod moved to Arch, I moved too. I can only recommend it.
