My 250GB Transcend External HDD is not getting detected. Help please. Even yesterday, I had used it successfully. I don't have a clue what happened.

It is getting detected on my desktop running PCLOS. However on my laptop running Arch and XP, nothing happens. It is recieving the power allright, but no detection. I tried with my Jaunty live CD on the laptop, which detects it wonderfully.

I wish you good luck and would be very interested in seeing the possible solution, since I am experiencing something similar.

Try another distro on LiveCD and see what dmesg as to tell, while plug in the HD.
BTW make sure your PHD (Portable Hard Disk) won't suck too muck power off the USB port, then some time goes off. Standard USB port provide 500 mA, maybe you should need a cable to plug into 2 ports for the purpose
But nothing to say, if already other OS can use your PHD.

do it good first, it will be faster than do it twice the saint

I don't know if this will be of any help, but I found out that device-kit got installed along with yesterday's kernel updates.

It wasn't any problem with 2.26.29-ARCH kernel.
Any hints?

Yay! My issue has been resolved. I just uninstalled devicekit-disks, rebooted, plugged in my HDD and voila KDE Device Notifier plasmoid pops out and shows my drive. Wonder what was wrong with devicekit, it got installed along with other updates !!

Strange! Gnome -gvfs - needs this package!

I had the same problem. It can be solved without uninstalling devicekit-disks by installing libatasmart 0.15-1 from aur. (see discussion https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/387161 and bug http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16662)

I have two external HDDs (3.5" and 2.5").. At least 3.5" is working. Of course, I can't find libatasmart 1.15 But it doesn't matter, I can wait.

Sorry, I don't get it I tried installing libatasmart with yaourt, but it's the same old version. Libatasmart-git didnt help either. But I can wait for binary, at least if it doesn't take weeks..

PKGBUILD for libatasmart found in /var/abs/extra/libatasmart/:
Changes:
pkgver=0.16
pkgrel=1
....
source=(http://0pointer.de/public/${pkgname}-${pkgver}.tar.gz)
md5sums=('165b9b8c228a30b4f9cb10f0e42f7b67')

The above post has the wiki link you need, though somewhat hidden
for an explenation on using the ABS:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ABS
basicly this will download PKGBUILDS for all binary packages. They will then be located in /var/abs/... You can then rebuild the package after you've applied the changes the above post indicates. Or simply wait for the binary to update.

Well libatasmart-0.16-1 didn't help, I also removed devicekit-disks.. Maybe the hard drive is actually broken, or needs more power. But I don't think so.
I hate my life.

Have you tried it under any other Computer/OS ?

OK tried with Knoppix and Puppy Linux LiveCDs, didn't work. Then I tried changin the HDD to different usb ports, and using both usb plugs. I HAD TRIED THAT BEFORE, but now it works! I don't know why.. I have always used it with one usb plug, and it has worked fine. Maybe it's possible that earlier it was that libatasmart problem (when I tried both usb plugs), but I don't understand why it needs "more power" now. Guess I should buy an active usb hub, I have 6 usb ports and I'm using 5 now..
Thank you all who tried to help..

I'm an Arch Linux user and I had the same problem.
The solution was install `ntfs-3g` and `reboot` my laptop
extra/ntfs-3g 2017.3.23-1 [installed]
NTFS filesystem driver and utilities
I can see my device now:
lsusb && sudo fdisk -l && lsblk && dmesg | tail -n 20`
udevadm monitor
