Hi,
so I read that there is no gdmsetup any longer in Gnome 2.28.
The Wiki says that to configure gdm now, one should execute 'dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties' as user gdm:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gno … g_gdm_2.28
But this doesn't work for me. When I run as root
# gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties
then I get the usual gnome-appearance-properties dialog, just as if I would launch 'dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties' as a normal user, except that of course, I can change the settings for user gdm instead of those of my normal user. But I can't see how to configure GDM from there. Here's a screenshot:
http://hetzner.scummunity.de/~malte/screenshot3.png
The Wiki also offers a second method using gconf-editor, but there I can't configure themes, I can only change the background image and such "simple" things.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Malte

New GDM uses regular GTK settings. Old themes no longer works. So changing colors, gtk2 theme and background is all that can be done now.
If you don't like it you may consider installing old gdm from aur:

My solution (on my girl-friend's pc, mine uses xdm anyway) was:
pacman -Rnsc gdm
pacman -S slim
Just FYI

Yeah but you can't switch users with slim. You can logout and login again, but you can't keep programs running while doing so.

you can run the old version of gdm safely with the newest gnome as well, so downgrading remains an option.

Wow, I didn't even knew gdm could do that. And I don't know why I should use
this feature for But nevermind, it was not a serious comment anyway.

Any chance there's going to be an Arch Theme for GDM 2.28? I was hoping something might come along.

Arch is unbranded, unthemed 'vanilla', so I wouldn't think so unless someone was to do an AUR version.
...nice idea though

There are Arch themes, as a separate package, for KDM and Slim in extra, for XDM in community, and for the old GDM in AUR. I'm pretty sure the one for GDM used to be in extra, before the upgrade to GDM 2.28.
I'm not suggesting the GDM package itself should be themed. Just that it would be nice to have a separate theme package for the new GDM, as their used to be. Unfortunately, I'm not a developer or programmer and have no idea how to do this. The old theme for the old GDM was really nice though.

You are absolutely correct, cb474. I just moved the gdm themes package from extra to the AUR this week. I no longer use GNOME or a login manager so I don't anticipate releasing a new edition for the new GDM. It sounds as though the new GDM has been simplified significantly so it shouldn't be too difficult for someone to whip up a theme based on the Arch colours, etc.

So, there is still no way to change the ogin screen theme in gnome 2.28?
A shame, because i used to personalize it with the arch themes found in aur..........
