Hi,
I install VMware player 3.0.1. It didn't work after inatall because "Kernel26-header" wasn't install. So I install kernel26-header. After that Vmware was able to start but wasn't able to build the require file it need. So I add to install "make" to compile the Vmware Kernel. After that everything start and when the Wmvare player windows appear it close by it self right away?
Strange?

Did you start the vmware services? prior to running vmware, what is the output of 'sudo lsmod' ??

I have the same problem with VMware player 3.0.1 quitting as soon as it appears. I've got all vmware services running correctly (running /etc/rc.d/vmware restart shows "done" for all and "fail" for nothing). This problem started after a kernel upgrade today or yesterday or a few days ago. vmplayer then said it needed to rebuild the modules and did and now it's just quitting instantly. After that I've tried installing and uninstalling vmplayer again, with no success.

Well, I updated my system and - poof - same problem.
Add the following lines to ~/.vmware/preferences
pref.vmplayer.downloadPermission = "deny"
pref.vmplayer.webUpdateOnStartup = "FALSE"
webUpdate.enabled = "FALSE"
pref.downloadPermission = "deny"

Thank you very much ewaller. I had the same problem and the solution you posted worked perfectly for me. I guess that we will have to update manually from now on (downloading from vmware's web page I mean).
