Did you remove all of these options (in case you had them) from the boot line?
i915.modeset=0 nomodeset and i915.powersave=0 vga=XXX
I was using the 2.9.1 version of the intel driver, and upgraded to 2.10.

I still get this problem with 2.6.33-ARCH it's not heavy but still annoying
EDIT: I'm using i915.lvds_downclock=0 as kernel param, but that doesn't help at least doesn;t completely solve it.

EDIT2: Just to make clear here the problem shows as occassional flicker

I am still having this issue with

Intel DG41TY mobo, 4500GMA graphics chipset using i915 driver
xf86-video-intel 2.10.0-1
xorg-server 1.7.6-3

When I enable KMS, my screen blanks out when it gets to about loading udev.
When I disable KMS, my machine boots, but it cannot start X due to KMS being disabled.

Enabling 'late' KMS did not help my issue.

I have no xorg.conf file.

Any help is much appreciated!

Hello,

Disable KMS, downgrade xf86-video-intel and install version 2.9.1-1

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xf86-video-intel-2.9.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz

I have an IBM X30 but I cant insert the i915 module

Hmm that is odd. It works for my 82830 chipset, with KMS disabled using xf86-video-intel 2.9.1-1

I'm using kernel26 2.6.33.2-1, fwiw.

So this shows nothing?

$ lsmod | grep i915

Are your packages right up to date? Meaning, have you did a 'pacman -Syu' just recently? If so, I would enable the testing repo and try the newest version of the drivers.

I have also wrestled with these exact same symptoms for the past 24 hours... thanks to those who supplied the rollback sources to version 2.9.

pacman -U http://arm.konnichi.com/2009/12/31/extra/os/x86_64/xf86-video-intel-2.9.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz

works for me (mark it in Ignorepkg in pacman.conf too)

New Gateway nv79; i915 video, kernel 2.6.34. Intel 2.11 driver fails unless there is an external monitor attached; then they both work!!!
How is it that this bug has been left to wander the earth for so long?

Edit: spoke too soon. All this does is force VESA rendering...a whopping 1024x768 on a 1600x900 panel...yeah great:rolleyes:

I have the GMA 4500MHD chip, i also get an occasional flicker while running Xorg.

Anyone know of the cause and how to fix this?

Not yet, (I'm in exams), I will try it when they're over, this weekend. The only problem is that I have arch installed on a tablet PC, and don't know how to configure wacom for 1.8 (the wiki entry for tablet PC is now outdated), so I'll search first, and then, once I manage to make it work, I'll post back. Good luck if you try!

I still have some flashes, but only once an hour or so.

the intel 830 chipset only runs with the vesa driver, very slow performance. glxgear show 60fps instead 180fps with the old xorg and the intel 2.9 driver

glxgears is not a benchmark.

Also 60 fps sounds like vsync.
