Hi,
i have ubuntu 10.04 64bit installed but i think that this problem occurs all linux distros. So, i bought ThinkPad SL510 (but as is read, all SL series is affected with this), but can not find any progamm for linux that should control fan speed/temperature. Fan is almost always working although the chase is cold. The fan noise is not annoying but, i just want to make it quite as possible.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1478820
http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/tp-fa … st-2481613
So, it seems that normal thinkpad apps (TPFanControl/Thinkfan...) are not working because SL series has ideapad firmware.
I tried to adjust fan with pwmconfig, but no go:
thinkpad@thinkpad:~$ sudo pwmconfig
[sudo] password for thinkpad:
# pwmconfig revision 5770 (2009-09-16)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.
We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
after the program has completed.
/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed
thinkpad@thinkpad:~$
sensors
are showing:
thinkpad@thinkpad:~$ sensors

So-as a newbie for all this stuff-but convinced that there is some fan control app/possibility for my Thinkpad SL510, hope to find some solution...
Thanks

Not sure the SL series supports those features... Check thinkwiki for hardware capabilities.
Just checked the links you provided and they say the same. Methinks: which part of NO do you not understand?

Well, i know that thinkpad fan controllers are not working with sl series (they have ideapad firmware). But i thought that maybe some other app should do that (as in many other laptops/manufacturer). E.g. few years ago i had asus eee pc (or acer aspire one- not sure any more) and i just had one small fancontrol.sh script that improved a lot fan noise.
So, i just thought, maybe there is some solution for thinkpad sl series...
I found it:

So, just hoping that some simple solution is to find here...

Or if there is option to enter the bios and change default values?

Take a look at his thread > http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=82447
It seems there is no support for the SLX10 models yet.
Here on my SL500 I can control the fan without any problems using the lenovo-sl-laptop module.

So, i bought ThinkPad SL510
All about SL510 here http://sysphere.org/~anrxc/j/articles/t … index.html
You need to install an RTFM interface.

Thanks for answer. But i have no idea how to install this sl module. Do you think they could work with sl510?
Coul you post how do you control your fan (install, startup...)
Thanks in advance...

Thanks-but i read that and there is nothing about fan-control...

Of course there is not, see the ACPI section again - no WMI driver, no profit.

I saw just now your text here:

I am using ubuntu 10.04 and i have everything working out of the box /at least i didn´t notice any crucial non working issue there...

Ok, to conclude-there is no (for now) possible fan controller for SL510?

One question: the fan control in sl500 and with lenovo-sl-laptop modul is working. Does anyone know where is to find/ask the developer of this module to ask if it will be updated for sl510?
Offline
Bump!
Really no way to control my fan in sl510?
Should here be some way to change factory values, or to make some script that would control the fan?
Just asking....

Still, can someone tell me why i can´t run /usr/sbin/pwmconfig? I followed instructions here (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fan_Speed_Control), but have no clue how to run it. It seems that other notebooks are controling fan speed with this program very well...

Didn't I already explain this to you? To control the fan with pwmconfig or anything else it has to be recognized, supported by the ACPI fan module and exposed in /proc/acpi/fan or /sys (or in case of special drivers like thinkpad_acpi somewhere else). There is NO support at this moment.
You need to install an RTFM interface.

Just trying... and how to find if there will be support? I mean, should i be updated in some kernel update or something lik that?
Thanks

You should write to Alexandre Rostovtsev and ask him what you can do to get SL510 supported by lenovo-sl-laptop. Which is probably not possible.
Following that you have to write to Lenovo, and kernel mailing lists linux-acpi and platform-driver-x86 asking about adding support for SL510 (and looks like SL410, L410, L510). Maybe support is added, maybe a third party module is developed (just like lenovo-sl-laptop is).
Until this is done we will not have support. Good luck.

Thanks-believe it or not, yesterday i wrote to Rostovtsev-still no answer... I will try to ask further...
Still, i found here some similar problem:http://www.ubuntu-forum.de/artikel/47250/workaround-lm-sensors-auf-ubuntu-9-10-mit-it87-chip-driver.html
They solved it in kamic. I do not know if it has anything to do with SL510 and Lucid, but i have the same outputs as them there...

anrxc, i read here your article. So, what would be your suggestion/or what can other users do to try to get acpi_thinkpad support?
