@Kariddi: maybe its some 2D acceleration issue... did you try to use old xaa rendering? (see bottom of catalyst wiki how to enable it)

The same happened with the 10.5 drivers, where the 2d accelleration wasn't enabled by default, so I suppose the problem lies somewhere else hmm

wierd stuff i tell you. I've had this working perfectly before.

I had a similar problem.  Try setting a large square resolution like "Virtual 3072 3072".    This allowed me to do 1366x768 + 1680x1050.  Before, I tried "Virtual 3046 1050", which is the exact dimensions I wanted, and I had the same problem... that is xrandr would not pick up the Virtual resolution settings at all.   Setting it to a larger square resolution fixed that problem and allowed me to have my normal LCD + my larger external LCD using xrandr.  Hope this helps.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello,

I updated today my system, which means I upgraded:
kernel .33 -> .34
xorg-server 1.7 -> 1.8
catalyst 10.5 -> 10.6

I'm using the catalyst-repo which works fine. Thanks to Vi0L0!
However, I'm only using the catalyst-driver from this repo and the xorg-server from extra! And that is exactly the strange part: It works. Wasn't the 10.6 supposed to only run with a version-patched xorg.server? Maybe somebody could shade some light on this.
The relevant part of my xorg.conf is here:
Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card1_2"
        Driver      "fglrx"
        VendorName  "ATI Technologies Inc"
        BoardName   "Mobility Radeon HD 3650"
        BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

I put my Xorg.log to http://pastebin.com/T3T4uQEU
Seams like 10.6 works with the stock xorg-server and as you can see 2D and 3D acceleration works fine. Just to mention it, the resizing issue with KDE has anyhow never been a problem for me, since I don't use desktop effects. So I never had a need for any kind of patched xorg-server. :-)

Cheers,
Armin

@Vi0L0: mplayer-vaapi in AUR does no longer depend on libva-sds in the catalyst repo. The libva in extra is now build with the sds support, which makes the libva-sds obsolete.

OK, I updated to Catalyst10.6, and I used the "XXA,TRUE command, but it is still artifact city here.

At least with firefox and pidgin. Is there anything else I can try? Attempted both patched xorg servers as well.

hmm

using mobility a radeonhd 3400

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hmmm... Sorry, that completely out of topic, but... Some time ago (longer) there was a problem with Catalyst and Xorg - I have stopped upgrading Xorg then. Now I am planning to do a full update of my Arch (after half of a year!) and I have a question - if I update both Catalyst and Xorg, will this combination work properly now? In other words, can I un-ignore the Xorg packages to be updated? Thank you for any help.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Is there something new concerning the segfault issue with catalyst 10.6?
I tried it again with the catalyst repo. I put it above all other repos in clyde.conf.
I installed catalyst 10.6 from the catalyst repo and with the xorg-server 1.8 from extra, I still get a segmentation fault.
Which packages are known to work? (espacially for those who had the segfault problem as well)
Creating a new xorg.conf and removing the mentioned files above did not help.

With 10.4 the situation ist not satisfying because wine can't run applications.

xcb_io.c:656: _XRead: assurance »dpy->xcb->reply_data != ((void *)0)« not achieved.

IT's translated but maybe its clear what it says...

It's okay, if you use the catalyst repo. If you're building catalyst yourself, you have to build the xserver first.

Must I BUILD the xserver or can I install the PACKAGE? I will be doing a full upgrade by yaourt and there AUR goes after normal repositories, so it' s OK.

Just take xserver from [extra] repo. If you are building catalyst via aur dont forget to reboot your precious arch after updating kernel and then build catalyst. If you are running stack kernel I recommend catalyst repo.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

hey guys,

First I want to apologize to you for my bad English.

I tried 2 days long to install catalyst 10.6 from Vi0L0's repo, but everytime if i started X, everything went black ( no terminal, no X, no error, nothing)

I installed my arch new and ask myself what did I wrong?
here are the steps:

First of all, I've got an arch(64bit) without X. Just installed the core. my graficcard is a RADEONHD 5750

1) Installing xorg:

pacman -S xorg

xorgs installs automatically the xf86-video-vesa driver. should I remove it?
2) Go on this page
and setup the [catalyst] repo in pacman.conf

 (...)
[catalyst]
Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/x86_64
[core]
# Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
[extra]
# Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
(...)

Updating pacman:

pacman -Syy
pacman -Suu

3) Install catalyst from Vi0L0's repo:

(Check if libgl is installed, if yes then remove it)

pacman -Rd libgl

install catalyst:

pacman -S catalyst

Wiki says:

Wiki wrote:

Don't forget to prepare your /etc/X11/xorg.conf for catalyst. Use aticonfig --initial if you don't have prepared xorg.conf. Also add fglrx module to MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf

So I do that.

Should I configure here the Xorg, like:

Xorg -configure

I remember, that Xorg crashes, because he didn't find the fglrx-module.

Or should I prepare it by myself?

Should I also do a reboot here or before?

4) Now it's going a bit difficult for me:

Wiki says:

Wiki wrote:

For x86_64 users [catalyst] provides lib32-catalyst-utils package needed to run 32-bit opengl applications and wine games.

Yeah I need that... installing:

pacman -S lib32-catalyst-utils

And now comes the part where my brain stucks:
Wiki says:

Wiki wrote:

With catalyst 10.6 AMD/ATi has provided 2D acceleration  - that funcionality has also fixed problems with maximizing/resizing windows , so out now there is no need of using backclear/backfill patches on xserver - although repository still contains xserver packages patched with this patches just in case that they may for somebody work better than unpatched xserver.

Please note that those patches will NOT fix any artifacts issues if you are experiencing that kind of known errors with catalyst 10.6. [catalyst] repository contains xorg-server-backclear (patched with backclear patch) and xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix (patched with fedora patch) packages. Both this patches were fixing problems with maximizing/resizing (until catalyst 10.6 with hes 2D acceleration arrived) but they were doing it in different way - you may choose which patched xserver is best for you. To remove xorg-server and install xorg-server-backclear just type:

# pacman -Rd xorg-server
# pacman -S xorg-server-backclear

Similar with xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix.

Should I do that?!
I installed that before and I'm not sure if that was the reason why X failed.
And what does the last sentence mean:

Last Sentence wrote:

Similar with xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix.

Should I also install that or not?

-) Other Questions:
Should I prepare the xorg.conf? I mean, I do not have any special requirements. I just have a 21" monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. That's all.

If somebody could help me, I would kiss him from the bottom to the top! sad

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Yeah, it's a little bit confusing... Have you run aticonfig --initial? Other than that make sure you install these too

xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-keyboard xf86-input-mouse

The xorg-server packages in the catalyst repos are patched. If you don't experience minimize/maximize problems there is no need to install them, you just stick with xorg-server from extra repo. The sentence which you don't get means that the same instructions for xorg-server-backclear also apply for xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix.

Well it looks like you did all steps correctly...

o'neill wrote:

1) Installing xorg:

xf86-video-vesa is sometimes used if fglrx isnt working, so you may leave it installed.

o'neill wrote:

Xorg -configure could brake something and isnt recommended. Just use aticonfig --initial to build basic xorg.conf, its all that you need right now, all input devices should be detected automagically by xorg-server. To tune your xorg.conf you may use amdcccle after succesfull X start.

o'neill wrote:

You may reboot, or just
# modprobe fglrx
and then start X

You actually dont need this. Try to run X with basic xorg-server. And NO - patched xserver is not the reason why X failed.

xorg-server or xorg-server-backclear or xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix. You cannot install it simultaneously.
Basically xorg-server-backclear and xorg-server-1.8-catalyst-maximize-fix packages brings faster maximizing/resizing windows for compositing and should be used by people whose get problems with new ATi 2D acceleration and switched to old xaa rendering method, more here

Is your /var/log/Xorg.0.log telling anything?

also 'hal'

pacman -S hal
