Have tried just putting

exec xterm

or

exec xterm

at the end in place of those last 3 lines to see what it does but to no avail.

Runing startx from a terminal seems to start a new session with twm and this is what it prints out after I exit it, not sure if this is helpful but pasting it here:

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start an Xorg session with a fresh install of Arch

when I try the 'Gnome Xorg' option

Try where? What DM? Doesn't sound like the xinitrc is relevant in tis context.
The presented X11 log shows the X11 server starting and immediately terminating, so that was a session issue.

[ 32.434] (II) IGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[ 32.434] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

Get rid of xf86-video-intel and iffff you wanted to use it you'd have to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … ecent_GPUs
I assume the swrast driver is a killer condition for gnome?

Thanks for your reply!

So I deleted the xf86-video-intel driver, tried again with the same result, here's the xorg log:

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start an Xorg session with a fresh install of Arch

You can remove xf86-video-vesa and xf86-video-fbdev as well.

There're various threads of people failing to log into a gnome 46 session (which is gnome 46 specific) - one common pattern is the inability to query the screensaver state, but that's like a symptom, not the cause and it affects wayland and X11 alike.

Another thing, if your pattern is consistent, is that gnome seems to invoke your $SHELL differently for wayland and X11 sessions, so this might be something in you .bash_profile .zprofile or .profile etcpp.

If it's nothing of the above, please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

after failing to log into an X11 session.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't start an Xorg session with a fresh install of Arch

Played around with my .bash_profile and .profile and found that it was sourcing cargo stuff and I hadn't installed it yet so after installing it the issue is gone. Thanks!
