Archbang name changed? Now Greenbang

Last July 2025, ArchBang was renamed to GreenBANG claiming legal concerns about action from Arch Linux over trademark laws.  I wasn't aware Archlinux had lawyers on staff. big_smile

I just noticed this as of today, isn't GreenBANG still using the same AUR and distro servers?   As I recall it is just Arch with Openbox GUI attached, or has it become something else?  I would download and test the iso, but I am busying testing a stack of DDR3 RAM chips today.

I don't know about "on staff", but they can always hire one if they want to. The GreenBANG Maintainer outlined in his blog post that he just want's the possibility to be out of the way, and is thinking about maybe providing different "undercarriages" like Alpine or Void or whatever hot thing comes around, and thus a more "neutral" name might be in order.

So, if that was the impression, no, to the best of my available information Arch didn't go after ArchBANG, and the ArchBANG/GreenBANG maintainer hasn't claimed so.

For the record, I've not seen anything on the staff MLs, but I am not on all of them

I personally (random lawyers opinions *will* differ. Also from mine) don't think anyone could claim "anything that begins with “Arch.”" (the french would probably like to have a word with you in that case), but there seems interest in marketing merchandise and then ArchBangLogo.png could easily be a problem.

Re: Archbang name changed? Now Greenbang

Thank you WorMzy for finding it a home, I am still new to new to your layout.

My first thought when I read that today was, maybe they want to distance themselves from Arch? Once you alter the distribution "too much" users start complaining it is no longer the same as the original.  I found it a bit odd is all.  I don't see them changing Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, etc. when they alter the desktop environment.  But then again, there are those who want to distance themselves from the origin and strike out on their own like Mint or BackBox.

BTW my RAM chips all passed testing.  I have rescued terabytes of RAM out of the dumpster in my city.  Today I have saved another 42 GB of DDR3 RAM people toss out like garbage, along with the PC. One 8 GB chip wouldn't fire, but after I wiped it down with a sterile alcohol pad, it too passed the testing.  It is amazing what people toss out still working inside the PC.  Although I am not too sure what I will do with all the old IDE HDD, but at least I have a good stack of SATA drives, can't wait to find those SSD soon.   I have found fully working PCs in the trash too.  One from a house fire, the reset switch melted shut was all.

I guess I will check out their GreenBANG iso and see what -- if anything -- has changed.  I keep wide variety of distros around for all these old PCs I salvage.
