[Help] How to configure software-guided duplex printing for HP LaserJe

Environment Information
OS:Arch Linux (x86_64, fully updated)
Printer Model:** HP LaserJet 1020 Plus (USB connection)
Desktop Environment:** Niri + Noctalia

Problem Description

I am currently using an HP LaserJet 1020 Plus on Arch Linux. This model lacks a hardware automatic duplexer.

In Windows, the official driver provides a "manual duplex printing" wizard: after sending a print job, the driver automatically prints all odd pages first, displays a prompt when done, and automatically proceeds to print the even pages once the paper is reloaded and confirmed.

Under Arch Linux, the print dialog lacks this workflow integration. Printing double-sided documents requires these manual steps every time:

1. Open the print dialog and manually select "Print odd pages only".
2. Wait for printing to finish, then manually flip and reload the paper into the tray.
3. Open the print dialog again and manually select "Print even pages only" (reversing page order if needed).

Manually splitting odd and even pages for multi-page documents frequently leads to ordering mistakes and missed pages.

I am looking for a configuration, CUPS filter, or script solution to automate this guided duplex printing process. Any advice or shared configurations would be appreciated.

Re: [Help] How to configure software-guided duplex printing for HP LaserJe

Please post (in code & /code blocks) the outputs of

$ pacman -Qs hplip
$ lpoptions -l

Welcome to archlinux forums.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [Help] How to configure software-guided duplex printing for HP LaserJe

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag … ices/index indicates

Model Name Min. HPLIP Version Chrome OS Support Driver Plug-in8 Support Level9 Print Mode Scan to PC3 PC Send Fax5 Connectivity
HP LaserJet 1020 Printer 2.7.10 No Yes Full (End of support) Mono No No USB

your printer needs a proprietary plugin from HP for full functionality.

The plugin can be installed by hp-setup -i , but most archlinux users prefer installing the aur package hplip-plugin .

If you're unfamiliar with AUR , start with reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Arch_User_Repository .

P.S. make sure the version of hplip-plugin and hplip match else things won't work.

I doubt hplip supports that.

However there are hp printers where a hardware duplex unit is optional and if it's absent the printer can switch to manual duplex.

In order to activate that option you have to access the printer directly. Typically that's done by connecting with the printer admin interface over the network, but with an usb connected printer that can be done through the proprietary plugin.

Cups / sane and similar support such connections IF the plugin is present. Windows tends to have the plugin integrated in the printer driver.
