BURG on Arch Linux

Hi I'm back ^_^ burg-manager it's done now it works on arch as it should I already put it on the aur and in the repo
that I made am also as always the patch it's in github so here are the links

I can't install it. I believe it's the same exit code as the one described by diegoxter at AUR page: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33382

Illiterate as I am I figured that it might have something to do with EFI. There's a package called burg-efi64 at http://code.google.com/p/burg/downloads/list that might be some sort of a remedy. And yes, I'm running a x86_64 system.

Hello everyone, I am the new maintainer for this group of packages. Regrettably cruznick has failed to respond to communication or make any indication his intent to continue. (Cruznick, if you are reading this and are interested in continuing maintenance of this and related packages, please inform me and I will gladly defer control back to you.)

The long standing build error, mentioned by benny_kenobi above, has been fixed. It was a very minor fix and mentioned in many places on the BBS and in AUR comments. (Many thanks guys!)

There are still several issues remaining. Here is a brief (todo) list,

[all] cleanup PKGBUILDS
[burg-bzr] add more options in /etc/default/burg
[burg-emu] eliminate extra files
[burg-emu] merge with burg-bzr; may be as split package
[burg-manager] find a new host for source
[upstream] figure out what's going on upstream. are they dead? have they moved?
[wiki] add a list of important files
[wiki] add cruznick's repo info (while it lasts)

Cruznick's repository will continue to match current until current moves on. Right now, there's no reason to update but perhaps in the future there might be. I won't have the time to keep a repository available. If someone would like to volunteer, be my guest.

I'd installed burg, however i ran into couple more issues:
1) after installing burg-bzr i couldn't install burg-themes since the script breaks at a point where it's trying to write to burgenv. I deleted it and tried again. It worked I guess - there's a themes and fonts folder at /boot/burg and gui.cfg and burenv are created.
2) I can't get my burg to load themes properly - it seems to be in graphical mode (as opposed to text mode which looks exactly like grub) but fails to load any graphics. I tried changing themes to no avail. The resolution change menu displays nothing - empty space where a list of options should be. I set GRUB_GFXMODE manually in /etc/default/burg, but with no visible effect.
The only thing I could thought of was that perhaps the font wasn't loaded correctly which according to this http://code.google.com/p/burg/wiki/Conf … nVariables could be important. That or (more likely) that I miss something to display the graphics in burg.

I got it working. Not sure why, but it's working fine now.

I'm glad that worked for you cause I have no idea how to solve it. (I am the worst guy for this job.)

Anyhow, heads up, my fixing of the PKGBUILD and other stuff is on schedule. This means I can make a testing release later this or early next week. The major change implemented so far is merging burg-emu into the package (yes it's optional). Comments, queries, rage and rants welcome.

I used to have the eye candy but I'm stuck in text mode (the usual grub bootloader look).

Whats up with development? Its been almost a month and I haven't heard a peep about this.

Do you have any idea why eye candy stopped working for you? Was this after the 1844-2 update? Did you make any changes to the config files (/etc/default/burg, /etc/burg.d, /boot/burg/burgenv)?

It stopped working awhile ago, I have no idea why. Package reinstalls and reconfiguring doesn't fix the issue.

@brando56894: Great! Good for you. I think other people had similar stuff with graphical stop working and working again on its own.

@everyone: Here are some updates regarding the latest issues with burg-bzr.

Users of burg are probably aware that the package has been updated to work with the new names for kernel images. Also, burg-emu has been merged into burg-bzr. (The PKGBUILD has a tunable to disable it.) This means cruznick's repo is now very likely out of date. Anyone who is still using it should switch to building from AUR. Anyone who still needs it should pressure the community to make a new repo.

I have made substantial changes to the wiki entry. I hope it's easier to read, more clear and helpful.

Upstream has unfortunately been inactive. There have been no updates since last year and bean hasn't responded to my emails.

At any rate, there are still issues to deal with. Here is a brief list,

[burg-themes] make it amenable to small /boot partitions (<32MB)
[burg-bzr] add more options in /etc/default/burg
[burg-bzr] check if it fails to build if there is an incomplete checkout
[burg-bzr] check if it can be installed with grub2 from [core]
[burg-manager] find a new host for source
[burg-manager] add sudo to deps array
[upstream] figure out what's going on upstream. are they dead? have they moved?
[burg] make a dedicated efi package?

Burg PKGBUILDs are currently in a state of transition. There have been a rename and tremendous restructuring of the PKGBUILD. Also an efi version is the works. All thanks to the.ridikulus.rat.

I hope it's ok to post this here...

I've just changed my boot drive (moved / and /home) to an OCZ Agility 3 SSD, partitioned as GPT with gdisk and installed burg-bios-bzr to it. I copied over /boot/burg (everything actually) from my previous install and issued an update-burg. Booting to Arch or Memtest works perfectly but trying to boot an ISO or WinXP fails (nothing happens).

I'm having difficulty finding any burg documentation and have tried gleaning something from grub2 docs but I'm struggling. I was using burg-bzr on the previous drive and these worked...

Should WinXP still work? I realise it's no longer on the boot drive, although the boot flag is still set for the drive it's on and the partition layout hasn't been altered there. I did expect the ISOs to still boot though. I've tried every possibility of '(hdX,6)'. I even tried different partition numbers in desperation!

Any ideas? Help greatly appreciated, thanks.

This works great! I can boot my ISOs again, thanks.

Unfortunately XP still fails to boot. We've made progress though as it now blacks the screen and I get a flashing white underscore in the top left corner. Any other ideas? At least I can remove "set root=(hdX,Y)".

I don't know about Windows XP (long time since I used it, using win7 now) but check whether you have C:\ntldr and C:\boot.ini files. Also add

GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_gpt part_msdos"

to /etc/default/burg so that next time you run burg-mkconfig, insmod statements for those modules are added to burg.cfg .

I have taken over the maintainership of the packages (actually about 2-3 weeks back). BIOS package (burg-bios-bzr) is at https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=53031 and UEFI package (burg-efi-x86_64-bzr) is at https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=53032. No 32-bit aka i386 UEFI package (not a big deal, but lack of such firmware in the market makes me lazy to provide a i386-efi package).

UEFI users: Please test burg-efi-x86_64-bzr package and give your feedback.

Sorry for the following slurry of slightly nooby questions:

My PC is x86_64 and has BIOS. So I use the (32-bit) burg-bios-bzr package?

This package appears to be marked as "out of date" on the aur site here https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php? … -bzr&SeB=x but not here https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=53031 or in yaourt output. Is it out of date or not? What's the status? Does it generally work cleanly?

I'm going to be reinstalling Arch soon. Is it possible/recommended to install burg from aur as part of installation? Or should I first install grub or something and then replace it with burg once I've rebooted into my new install?

Success! I added those modules but it still wouldn't work, so I thought I'd try altering C:\boot.ini to point to the other drive but that made no difference. I did find something else though and now it's working with the drivemap entry added...
