Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

Yeah, apparently I was too hasty. It still happen to me, as well -- although, it does seem like it happens less often now. Or, maybe I am just seeing things. And yes, there's no logs neither.

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

I now suspect that the crashes are a consequence of overheating. After some compiling, I noticed that the CPU fan does not speed up, and soon a crash followed too.

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

hi ! I'm experiencing the exact same problem with my asus M6bne (ati 9700 pro m11) : random freeze, mostly when my screen go off (even with a screensaver)

The freeze occurs with the default arch kernel and with a custom build kernel 2.6.35.2, but always with x launched (no freeze in a tty for 2 days..). The problem is not cause by the hardware in my case, but most likely by the combo radeon-driver + kms.

I have recompiled the kernel 2.6.33.7 with kvm, but without the option "Enable modesetting on radeon by default" in device drivers/graphics support/direct rendering manager. I use kvm with intel_agp & radeon module in mkinitcpio.conf and radeon.modeset=1 in menu.lst and so far, no freeze...

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

Looks like the kernel 2.6.35.3 + the new version of xf86-input-evdev (xf86-input-evdev-2.4.0-2) solve the problem for me..

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

X -version

X.Org X Server 1.8.1.902 (1.8.2 RC 2)
Release Date: 2010-06-21
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.34-ARCH x86_64
Current Operating System: Linux laptop 2.6.35-ARCH #2 SMP PREEMPT Sat Aug 14 21:58:00 CEST 2010 x86_64
Kernel command line: root=/dev/disk/by-label/arch64 ro vga=0x31A quiet
Build Date: 21 June 2010 12:01:49PM

I don't have problem here, but with nvidia drivers installed.
I'm trying to setup an Arch USB setup without xorg.conf and all the results end up on a scrambled display, if I don't put a defined xorg.conf (I suppose)
Booting form USB will happen to start up and change automatically display size as detected, if I'll start X then the display will be unreadeble and any trial to go back to the console will be vane and difficult to handle. Even if it is correctly working.
I think the kernel people want to try some issue on display issues and it still non completely working.
I found some detail  at http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/

EDIT:

I could solve partially my problem, but I'm afraid it won't work for other PC than mine.
The solution was to put some of the xorg-video-drivers.  Now I can get into a graphic login

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

Same problems here, since 2.6.34, hardware is a Samsung P35 (Radeon RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]), random freezes mostly while using browsers, so I went back to 2.6.33 and xorg-server 1.7 eversince. Once I tried to use xorg-server 1.8 with 2.6.33 and got strange behavoir of konqueror which always chrashed upon starting.
I guess it is a graphics freeze having something to do with the kernel developers working on the radeon driver, something with power management, if I remember correctly.

Question is, does 2.6.35 solve the problem? Or how long will it take till it is fixed for the old Radeon 9600?

No crashes here either. However, I'm experiencing a huge performance drop. Probably the same issue as discussed here.

I tried kernel 2.6.35.3 (with gentoo-patches) and xf86-input-evdev-2.5.0 today.
No changes for me. Freezes still occur.

Yeah, no freeze for me for about 48h, but i'm experiencing a performance drop and in-games screen flickering with world of goo, darwinia & defcon.
This problem go away with a kernel < 2.6.35, but random freeze are back with 2.6.34.5... :'(

Which subversion?
I'm trying to git bisect the kernel and until now I was able to narrow the bug (for me) down to the higher 2.6.33 area.

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

Hello. I'm not an Arch user (I use gentoo), but I stumbled across this topic while google'ing for my problem. I too
suffer from this same issue and have similar hardware (IBM Thinkpad T42, which has a radeon 9600 mobility M10 / rv350).
This is actually the first forum thread that I have been able to find that seems to describe the same issue in such
detail and with so many replies of people with the same problem. I wanted to point out that I have opened a bug
on freedesktop.org regarding this issue, bug #28402, which includes an attempt at bisecting the issue which lead
me to the same area vootey pointed out, sometime shortly after the release of 2.6.33 (which is stable for me too).
Hopefully we can combine our efforts and find a solution to this issue. Kernel 2.6.36 is soon to be released, and
likely will still have this issue (I recently tested 2.6.36-rc2). So that will be the third series of kernels that are
unusable for us.

Okay, for interested ones: I posted my bisect results at 'da fox's bug report https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=28402.

Maybe it's a good idea for all participants to continue the discussion there.

Strange, I just had a freeze with kernel 2.6.33 and xorg-server 1.7.6-3 while using firefox (changing tabs) !?! Well, but that was the first in many months and might have different causes (system and firefox ran for 2-3 days straight)!?

Since you seem to use an Intel video chip and my system doesn't crash with your reproduction-crash-site (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20378?getfile=5566) I believe, our issues are not related.

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

Even before this random freezes, I was having my window manager mysteriously log out of the session, wonder if this might still indicate that a problem like this was in the works (intel keeps changing their methodology for the video cards?), maybe they've had a few mysterious bugs for awhile.  In more recent kernels, the video mode goes graphic just after bootup even if it's not using a window manager (console mode).  Real annoying opening up a few applications and then coming back later and seeing the login manager.  I don't use a login manager on all of my archs, and they work just fine.  Maybe there's a problem with the session manager having a seg fault?

I had a similar scenario when I was using 32-bit arch on a 64-bit architecture.  Every once in awhile the 32-bit would disappear into a caps lock flashing only crash and would be corrected only by a reboot.  I use the 64-bit arch on the 64-bit architecture and not having that problem anymore.  I'm assuming that the 32-bit kernel is inherently identicial to the same version in the 64-bit kernel.  The other machine was 64-bits on 64-bits and whatever the bug was prevented it from booting.  Wonder if this is related.

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

Now I am really confused.. I switched to kernel26-lts version 2.6.32.20-1 and the machine froze up, when I tried to copy and paste something between two tabs in firefox. Ofc there is nothing to find in everything.log.. I switched to kernel26 (2.6.35.4-1) now again as it doesnt seem to make a difference.

Maybe the responsible patch has been included in .20 ?

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

I was looking through this post because the computer will sometimes reboot when I login. (radeon 9600 RV350). Looks like kernel downgrade is the only fix.

dt wrote:

This is possibly unrelated, there is a bug in glipper which will cause a freeze with a large copy/paste.

Re: Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

Today I tried switching to up-to-date kernel26-2.6.35.7-1, xorg-server-1.9.0-1, xf86-video-ati-6.13.2-1 (and so on)  and got immediately a freeze when using firefox. So I had to return to kernel26-2.6.33.4-1,  xorg-server-1.7.6-3, xf86-video-ati-6.12.192-1 (and so on) which I'm stuck with for months.
Hardware is a Samsung P35 Notebook with Centrino Pentium M 1,6 and Radeon 9700 (lspci: RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]).

I hope the kernel and xorg developers will finally fix this issue soon.

Have you tried other combinations, cro? An old version of kernel is all I need to keep my machine stable, i.e. Xorg can be updated without a problem.

Yes, once I tried xorg-server-1.8 with kernel 2.6.33 and got other problems (konqueror crashing) so I could not test if I get graphics freezes or not.
When I find some time I will try again.
