The 256.44 driver is out of testing and it is the driver giving some models difficulties.  256.35 seems to be the last version that was agreeable to all of the latest cards, but is no longer the default driver.  It appears as though there is a newer 256.44 package in testing, but unless Nvidia is squashing bugs without incrementing the version number, I'd guess that it still won't help out.

I'm trying to say that even if you do not use testing, you may have the problems described in this thread - depending on which GPU is in your system.

Re: nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

Whats wrong with you? nvidia 256.44-2 is in [extra], 256.44-3 is in [testing] and only added yesterday. So everyone is using [extra]. What you just said is pointless and irrelevant. Sorry for being rude.

Labello wrote:

i deactivated testing and everything is back to normal. i experienced some freezes when using blender/cinelerra/nexuiz but this has stopped after disabling testing-repo :-)

Re: nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

The latest prerelease nvidia driver (256.52) has the bug fixed http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ?p=2309077. I have had no problems with it so far today. Running the following no longer freezes X

mplayer -vo vdpau filename

Here are the package builds I used for the new driver:

nvidia-256.52:
nvidia.install: http://pastebin.com/W2xm5Dis
PKGBUILD: http://pastebin.com/ht3PhqKC

nvidia-utils-256.32:
nvidia.install: http://pastebin.com/MRYuiPh0
PKGBUILD: http://pastebin.com/3mTbMhqd
20-nvidia.conf: http://pastebin.com/AccLMMCV

They are just the ones from extra with the version and md5sums updated and I have only tested this with the x86_64 architecture.

N.B. When building the nvidia-utils package if the folder name includes the version number e.g. nvidia-utils-256.52, makepkg will exit with an error. Don't have the time to try and fix it so maybe someone with more sed-fu can work it out.

Update: fixed x86 md5sums

Re: nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

btw. the xorg-server in [extra] isn´t a stable version too

Name : xorg-server
Version : 1.8.1.902-1

as you can see its something like an unstable Version (Beta or RC) so maybe the problem with the nvidia driver is also related to that.

nVidia Drivers are created to run on stable version of X-Server

Re: nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

That xorg-server version was the latest release candidate for 1.8.2. There were however no new changes in 1.8.2 so the version in the repos actually is the stable version. It makes no sense to repackage the same software so it was not changed.

Re: nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

Thats so confusing with X.Org

If i go to the homepage http://x.org they tell me that 1.7.1 is the latest stable release of x-server

http://ftp.x.org/pub/current/

http://www.x.org/releases/X11R7.5/src/xserver/

Re: nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

I confirm that 256.52 works fine (KDE 4.5, Quadro FX 2700M).

... edit: freeze when starting a Windows 7 VM with VirtualBox....

I think you're confusing X.Org with xorg-server. The latest X.Org release is 7.5, (X.Org = a bundling of X-related software such as the server, input handling, etc..). That X.Org 7.5 contains xorg-server 1.7.1 as stated by http://www.x.org/wiki/Releases/7.5. X however is fairly modular and you can replace components such as xorg-server with a more up to date version.

Same for me.  GTS 360M.  Disabled compositing (again) and it seems stable enough.  To be honest I may just keep compositing disabled permanently from here on out.  I'm getting used to it and my GPU isn't constantly pegged at the highest clock with the corresponding 178F temperatures to match.

Re: nvidia 256.44-1 warning!

8600GT, 256.53 on x86_64: freezes on Virtualbox 3.2.8 startup with or without composite.
Will try Vbox with nv driver later.
