I'm currently trying to decide whether to get into i3, awesome or herbstluft..

I can tell you from experience that, although awesome looks really great, i3 is so much easier to setup, understand and embrace. I haven't turned back ever since. The WM is a lot simpler and lighter too (not too many dependencies as awesome once had), configuration is dead easy to generate and edit, documentation is spot on. Definitely give it a try. Here, I found this one to help you out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSPcQ7Sdoh4

I don't about herbstluft though. You would have to ask someone else, sorry smile

I can't decide over awesome & i3.
I think if i3 had the ability of widgets like awesome I would move over but I really love awesome & find myself logged into that more than i3

Hi, what are those programs you're using there >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>, on urxvts?

unsure what the top one is but it looks to be a wireless info screen, then we have iptraf followed by ncmpcpp at the bottom

It's not iptraf, it's iftop.

If you need a menu system then might want to stay with Awesome. I find the i3 config file easier to read than Awesome's rc.lua, and I like how i3 implements windows a lot more. Also, it helps to watch the i3 video:

I'm not quite sure what a menu system is, but thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

The equivalent to a Start button, and then selecting your apps that way. With i3 it's mainly dmenu.

That being said, there are menu-like options out there.

I'm currently still using XFCE and I use the menu almost never, I use a keyboard shortcut to run program (xfce application finder). So I guess I'd be comfortable with dmenu..

Is your ~/.i3/conky the same as one of your pastebin conky files?

Work setup with i3, geany, some urxvtc's and lariza. Merging some commits of mine into the webkit2 branch of lariza. I'm going with the simple and clean fixed font. Linux rocks!

Can you post the config files. I actually wont get conky work with i3. Either I get a ordanary window, that gets scaled when other windows appear, or with `background yes` all my windows starts to disappear on every conky-update, and reappear when there is some action in these windos (most times the mouse_over)

I have a regular .conkyrc file and use exec --no-startup-id conky in my # Autostart section

Re: i3 desktop screenshots and config sharing

No one has posted in months so I thought I would make a little demo of what I'm looking to put on my next laptop in a Docker container. Colors need adjusting and I didn't bother running Conky.

Not much change in config, but a change from 4:3 to 1080p, which is nice.
