Re: The linux-pf thread; BFS/CK, TuxOnIce, BFQ, AUFS3

cross posting this from the following https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1325111, apologies to those who might have seen the earlier post.

hi all,
i just completed the installation of pfkernel on my machine (thinkpad-w510, x86_64). i needed this for the tux-on-ice patches that are included by default in this kernel. however, when installing nvidia-pf, which is the default package for nvidia module on this kernel, i get the following message:

fatcat ~ # pacman -S pfkernel/nvidia-pf
resolving dependencies...
warning: cannot resolve "linux-pf<3.11", a dependency of "nvidia-pf"
:: The following package cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies:

:: Do you want to skip the above package for this upgrade? [y/N]
error: failed to prepare transaction (unexpected error)

fatcat ~ # pacman -Ss linux-pf | grep insta
pfkernel/linux-pf 3.11.1-1 (base) [installed]

fatcat ~ # uname -a
Linux fatcat 3.11.1-pf #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Sep 9 23:14:03 EEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux

can you please help me fix the dependency issue ? thanks !

In fact I just wanted to ask what about i686 - of course needed smile I think this the best kernel for old machines now. Please remember about zswap (tested in -ck : works like charm). And great thx for all affort with compiling -pf

Is it enabled in the -ARCH kernel? If yes I'll enable it.

EDIT: I enabled bcache as module however I'll push the updated configs when a new update is released if you want built it before see:

Re: The linux-pf thread; BFS/CK, TuxOnIce, BFQ, AUFS3

Does anywhere are precompiled linux-pf 3.11 packages? I think that on my Atom N455 compiling would be very long and I'll can't use my netbook behind this process.
Also, I'm interested in linux-pf-atom package. Thanks.
//in 3.11, developers has fixed a very annoying bug (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49201), which doesn't gives me ok to use my Wi-Fi.

---------

Oh, I'm sorry, see that kernel in pfkernel repo. But bug didn't disappear, it's time to google deeper

The kernels you can find here and in the repo are very special builds suitable only for certain architectures. As it is quite rare that those special kernels are provided by linux disiributions (in fact, I don't know any distro that provides specialised kernels for their users officially, not even Arch, since those kernels here are user contributions), you probably won't have any luck in finding other packages than these here.

However, if it is that important to you, it shouldn't be impossible to compile them on your own: if you use ccache and compile your kernel with localmodconfig you might get quite decent compile times (i.e. under half an hour) I can imagine…

How about using BFQ with SSD? Or CFQ is better for them?

Great, thanks! I had two total system freezes with this new version, corrupt sectors on *home* and am using vanilla at the moment since it so much felt like it would have something to do with the kernel. Has anyone experienced similar things?
