Re: [new] wmii-cvs - updated May 4th, 2005

Hmmm, not at the moment... the best I could say is: copy /etc/wmii/* to ~/.wmii/ and then checkout the "rat" file for keybindings....

Re: [new] wmii-cvs - updated May 4th, 2005

new snapshot:
http://wmi.modprobe.de/2005-04-20.png

- new layout mechanism (!!!!)
- new key bindings

A new package will be coming in my repo shortly... when wmii-1 is release (may 1st?) I will place the package in AUR, but still maintain it

The layout mechanism is fairly complicated...

Anselm R. Garbe wrote:

To get started with it, forget all about what you knew about tiled
window managers. As starting point to get familiar with it I recommend
executing following key sequence:

term (mod1+t), apply_quad_layout (shift+mod1+q), term (mod1+t), term (mod1+t)

The underlying layout definition can be found in wmii/rc/rc.conf, look
for QUAD_LAYOUT.

The frame cycling has changed because of layouts:

select_{prev,next}_frame actions (mod1+h, mod1+l or mod1+Tab,
shift+mod1+Tab) select frames on the same nesting level, to select a
parent/child frame in a nested layout you have to get familiar with
the new actions:

select_{parent,child}_frame (mod1+j and mod1+k)

That means that frame cycling has a Z layer, but that has beside
seeming complex some advantages, because you can cycle through frames
in a very local sense, check it out.

(Of course you can use the mouse to get familiar with it).

To get familiar with new shortcuts just look into wmii/rc/rat script.
The default configuration mode is "advanced" mode - this is pretty
similiar to wmi-10. User of emacs should change MODKEY definition in
wmii/rc/rc.conf anyway to mod4 for instance.

Its been pushed back to May 15th this time.

What's your opinion on the new layout system as compared to the old?

Re: [new] wmii-cvs - updated May 4th, 2005

haven't tried it - I think it looks cool... basically you can think of it as being kinda similar to ion's floatws...

it allows you to have layouts within layouts... for instance, I want a frame to have 3 vert-maxed windows, now in the far right window, I want to have 3 horiz-maxed windows, then in the bottom of *that* have 3 vert-maxed windows... (golden spiral if you were paying attention, heh)

I'm going to play with it when I get home, but it looks promising

phrakture-

You're good -- just saw 20050420 added to your repo

Thanks!

Can't wait to try it this weekend. My ion2 is getting nervous.

Re: [new] wmii-cvs - updated May 4th, 2005

they changed the layout model and its pretty unstable right now (more than the last snapshot) - i.e. MODKEY+tab too much crashes the decorations sometimes... I've bitched on the devel mailing list... a new snapshot should be coming soon....

looking forward to the new snap.
Hopefully they will eventually stop changing the key bindings with each snap.

I agree - it's getting annoying... especially because the config changes for each snap, so I really can't use my old custom configs...

once wmii-1 is released, I'm going to revamp the config system to something easier to use....

umm... maybe it's date format differences... in the US, most people do Month/Day/Year - I'll switch it to be more universal

Ugh, the stability and usability of this snapshot dropped like a rock...

focus is really screwed up, and the layouts crash wmii alot... sigh, May 15th, heh good luck

Yep- it's not much fun to use. I'm going back to an older version. Thanks for the PKGBUILD and the pkg (I couldn't link this 1st of May version for some reason: the linking process couldn't find STRLCPY).

cheers

it's a change in the config.mk file...

anyway, I'm going to start keeping up on the darcs version (though it curently won't build)

Re: [new] wmii-cvs - updated May 4th, 2005

ok, there's a new version, appended with an a to address some minor things with the stability snapshot... if anyone downloaded the original package, get the newest one (pacman thinks "${VERSION} > ${VERSION}a" so just force it...)

Re: [new] wmii-cvs - updated May 4th, 2005

Okay, I downloaded, installed, and played around with wmii for a while and it does look really interesting.  It takes a little while to get the hang of it but once you do, it's really fast to work with.

I'll definitely be spending some time with it once it becomes more stable and has better documentation.    8)

Re: [new] wmii-cvs - updated May 4th, 2005

The last reply to this thread was on my birthday... Do you think the real stable release will be made Jun 01 like it says on the wmii home page? hehehe.

Is the current snapshot stable enough to use, or should I install something else for now? I'm not in the mood to customize all my wmi keybindings again...
