Re: October 2010 Screenshots

Finally  got my newly built desktop up and running yesterday. Using pretty much the same theme as the laptop until I can find another one that I like.

Re: October 2010 Screenshots

Nice thread. I'm still searching for a look on my desktop at work that feels right, without luck. I have been happy with my laptop's look, but I'm getting a little tired of it so I'll probably change it soon. I thought I'd post it for the record.

WM: Compiz standalone but with a lot of GNOME stuff installed, including the panel. Emerald decorator.

Finally full set of monochromatic plasma systray icons and some slight changes in plasma theme - otherwise nothing special.

My cube is no longer a cube: it's a pentagonal prism. Trying to get more used to having a desktop for each separate task I do.

That's a Unicode character picker plugin thingy for the gnome panel. I use a lot of logic and set theoretic symbols in my work. So click on that, and it put the symbol ℵ or what-have-you into my clipboard selection so I can paste it into the document I'm writing (or forum post as the case may be...). I used to use it a lot, though now I've mostly switched over to using vim keyboard bindings, or LaTeX codes.

Either that or my desktop is indeed infinite.

Re: October 2010 Screenshots

Here's my Desktop, based on the slim default theme, because I love having a smooth transition from login to desktop. Conky is a must. Also, I use Xfce, but with lxpanel, because I like the icon-only task manager (rather than a completely different applet) and the more logical applet movement, and complete panel opacity with shadows (actually just a by-product of compositing in Xfce). I just think this looks AMAZING without all the crap that comes with gnome or kde, and I don't like using compiz, all power hogs, imo. Oh, yeah, on a laptop, fairly new and powerful, the lightness is just for some extra battery life.

A simple way to change the background of your SLiM login would be to move /usr/share/slim/themes/default/background.jpg to a backup location and do:

# ln -s /link/to/your/wallpaper /usr/share/slim/themes/default/background.jpg

You could also write a theme for SLiM
