Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

I'm quite fond of this driver set. Previous driver releases had more issues with xcompmgr than this one; e.g. Blender crashed the whole X server when starting with xcompmgr enabled. Not any longer; support for the composite extensions seems a lot more stable than before.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

for those with freezing/crashing X:
it would help if you post your card and if you use composite or not.
then i can fill the known issues section in nvidia wiki.
and please post stuff only if you use my package, because i add patches to the drivers and plain drivers don't have those.
atm it looks like again that gf4 mx cards are affected and one was with a gf2 card, but was this mx or something else?
btw are tnt2 card working again they were also broken in last release.
thanks for helping me collecting info.
greetings tpowa

I've had trouble with a GF 2, but only when browsing sourceforge download sites, go figure. When it happens, it crashes hard, keyboard doesn't work (no ctrl-alt-backspace!!!!). Mouse moves, but does not respond to clicks.  Have to reset it to get anything working again.

hudson:  Thanks, that worked.  Guess I'll have to keep an eye on whether new groups are added.  I remember having to do the same with audio not that long ago.

Yes!

I was having a recurring problem with one script I was running in an xterm. Commenting out the RenderAccel "true" line and rerunning X allows the script to run.

I have no idea what was wrong with it, however. wink

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Dusty, from my experiences since the 4xxx versions, the hardware render acceleration seems to get 'schitzo' because of certain fonts (and don't ask me which ones).

In one NVIDIA version I remember (in conjunction with a certain X/freetype release), everything worked fine until I pulled up openoffice's font selection menu or from 'xfontsel'.  Then, the sh$t would hit the fan.  For everything else, and I mean everything else, it would work flawlessly....

I think I kept everything else the same, and only updated 'freetype' lib.  Then, I didn't have those crashes anymore.  That's my best guess from my own experiences using the hardware render acceleration.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

Strange, I have update my nvidia and I have no such problems at all, but I do not use composite since I have bad experiance of it. I tried to add an "Extensions" section in my xorg.conf with nothing in it and when i restarted xdm all frozed like a f***ing snow bitch. I guess you have to use gdm, but im not sure. Anyway, I have a Geforce 6800 le.

However, I got one thing that bothers me and that is I can not use vc/1,2,3..etc. When I try to switch to one of the VCs I only see lots of pixels like, red, green etc all over the screen. Why is that and how can I get rid of it.

This release is very buggy considering what it takes to crash your system (just running firefox). I've downgraded to 1.0.6629-2.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

KDE 3.4 doesn't like xcompmgr on my system--crashes often, sometimes already when opening a file browser window.

No problems with GNOME 2.10, mind. The driver is far more stable for me, with xcompmgr enabled, than the old one.

MSI Delta2
1 GB RAM
GF-FX-5500
I have tried everything I can think of to get the new drivers to stop craching my system. Disabled rendering in xorg, disabled fastwrites in BIOS and in modprobe.conf, Lowered the AGP to 4x instead of 8x in BIOS and still I get lockups. Dmesg always has the NVRM errors listed. Sometimes I can get out of the freeze, other times not. Think I'm going to go back to a older ver. with some stability.

Re: nvidia-1.0.7664 in [extra]

you are affected by the nvidia not supporting too old GPU's anymore
please stay with old driver until the legacy drivers will be released.
