Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

So I've seen commits regarding xfce on  the commits list..
how are they related to 'our' repo here? what's newer?
I don't use testing, so I haven't really looked too deeply, just thought I'd ask...

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

The packages are the same.
By the way, as xfce4.8 has been introduced in testing, I'll remove my repository (but keep the AUR up-to-date)

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

Hi guys.
I use some parts of xfce, (thunar, terminal, xfburn) and I updated them from testing to make my hal-ectomy. I noticed that last thunar update ship the .pkla file for permission issue.
Fist of all: mount and automount work adding dbus-lauch to my exec string in .xinitrc (but not for root user hmm, probably 'cause my root user is not in storage group), but unmount fails with this popup

Error starting job: Failed to execute child process "eject" (No such file or directory).

P.S.
Anybody knows the current state of the real fix of the problem, when we could delete .pkla?

Do you have the package eject installed on your system?

$ pacman -Qo `type eject | cut -d\  -f3`
/usr/bin/eject is owned by eject 2.1.5-4

ArchLinux - make it simple & lightweight

it works...thanks.
Seriously...it needs an external program to unmount volumes...bha...
However I think it should be put into depends array.
Thanks again.

Most linux software use other software for stuff like unmounting, either eject, hal, udev or udisks for example.

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

obviously, no need to reinvent the wheel.
I was wrong 'cause I was confusing unmount with eject, which are different processes. I was wondering why they didn't use umount, that's present by default on every system. Now I know what was wrong in my thoughts.
A little whine:
there's no possibility to unmount without eject tongue

Surprisingly Thunar umounts everything properly for me without eject. I'm just ignoring the error of lacking eject in the system. wink

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

How could you unmount? I have no option in contextual menu, just mount and eject

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

If you only have the "mount" option doesn't that mean its already unmounted?

Yes, but if I mount it, "mount" become unclickable (grey), but no "unmount" option is shown.

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

Is xfce4-power-manager working for any of you?
With previous version, it changed the cpu profile from ondemand to conservative when unplugged, but now it always stays on performance.
Any way to get the old behaviour without cpufreq_utils?

Same question as above + my desktop launchers have those hideous .desktop extensions. Any way to hide them? They are hidden when browsing Dekstop folder within Thunar, but are visible on the desktop.

I have no knowledge of these things, but I wonder if it's related to suspend and hibernate not being allows until you set up a policykit pkla file. Maybe you need to set another one up to be able to manipulate cpu frequency. I don't know how to figure out if that's true or how the file should look, though.

Just an idea.

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

Will the Wiki be updated as I guess that XFCE 4.8 does not need HAL any more.  I guess some are having problems with it though as some packages are still pointing to old packages which need HAL.  I will wait some time to make sure that all packages are the new ones and hopefully by then the Wiki will be updated.  I am using KDE at the moment but really like XFCE and thankful for the Wiki since it makes it easier for people to set this up.  Like me I am used to just installing an OS that already has this set up so really appreciate the work that went into the Wiki.

I do not think that I could do it since I know nothing about setting up any thing.  I guess this is why I keep going back to KDE as their is nothing to set up.  You just install it and every thing that is needed is installed.

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

So for you, what do you feel is missing from Xfce? What does Xfce need that is not automatically installed?

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

I have not installed this in some time but if you check the wiki you have to install a number of other items.  For KDE I just do a pacman -S kde and it installs every thing that I need.  I usually have to many items and uninstall those such as kdetoys and kdeedu as I do not use those.  I guess I would like all the programs necessary to get a working desktop in just doing a pacman -S xfce4.  I basically want a login window, a desktop that I can look up where files are located and mount and unmount removalable media.  Other programs like browsers and music players I would be more then happy to install this.  For KDE these are installed as well but I do not mind installing extra it would just be nice to not have to configure so much to get a working desktop.

Re: Xfce 4.8 pre1

That is correct.  One thing I forgot to mention is being able to do a shutdown and restart as well.  I know I can do this in the command line but also know some times that XFCE does not have this option and it needs to be setup.
