There was a change in behaviour of KWin. It is actually limited at 35 FPS by default if VSync is enabled. This reduces cpu load by KWin, at least on my lappy. I suppose that if someone hasn't got KWin Vsync enabled he wouldn't notice.

If you want a smoother KWin just add the following line in ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc under the [Compositing] Section

MaxFPS=60

Or the value that works best for you. For less tearing it should be the same with your monitor's Refresh Rate.

I can also say that the double entries problem when HAL is running is gone thanks to the packaging efforts of bash. And my screen backlight is working great now, even hardware backlight keys work as expected so most laptops should be fine (these changes were backported by bash before).

Its better when i set MaxFPS to 60, but its still much worse than what is in kde 4.5. I tried setting it to 100, but still no luck. I also see tearing even i have sync to vblank enabled, when i have sync to vblank enabled in kde 4.5 i dont see any tearing.

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

I use KDE 4.5.4 from [extra] and I just need to know how safe is to add [kde-unstable] repo and go to update sistem? Is there any problem with KDE 4.6 rc1?

I use K3B, do I need do keep hal in daemons or what?

Can I remove hal?

Does KDE 4.6 have some problems with intel graphics Cards, for example blur or something?

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

I wouldn't recomend it, I tried it yesterday (as the wiki page says) and I got stuck on a black screen with krunner, which didn't work.

When I ran KDE from console, it was telling about some libraries version conflicts... Maybe I got something from KDE 4.5 and something from KDE 4.6? Because Krunner and Nepomuk worked - but Krunner crashed after pressing tools button and Nepomuk just bloated and bloated... No commands in Krunner worked, just the system monitor window did.

Thanks for the GNU/Linux. EDIT:Thanks for the GNU/Linux, Linux guru, for the manuals and wikis.

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

heya,

I have KDE 4.6 (testing) installed on a Lenovo X200 with Intel 945 GM

I originally posted here:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 72#p869772

but they pointed me to here smile.

1. Suspend not working

Suspend for me still isn't working even with the latest packages - it basically just blacks the screen out, but doesn't suspend (everything is still on and running), moving the mouse or pressing a key brings up the unlock screen.

I tried looking for the /usr/share/kde4/services/powerdevilupowerbackend.desktop file mentioned in post #100, it doesn't seem to exist on my filesystem:

[victorhooi@narsil-arch services]$ ls -lah powerdevil*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.6K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevilbrightnesscontrolaction.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.9K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevildimdisplayaction.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3.5K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevildisabledesktopeffectsaction.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.5K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevildpmsaction.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3.2K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevilglobalconfig.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3.0K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevilhandlebuttoneventsaction.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3.0K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevilprofilesconfig.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.5K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevilrunscriptaction.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.3K Dec 18 07:37 powerdevilsuspendsessionaction.desktop

I tried using the manual command referred to in post #24 of this thread:

[victorhooi@narsil-arch services]$ sudo dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
method return sender=:1.9 -> dest=:1.36 reply_serial=2

It just flashes the screen once, then returns that second line (method return sender...).

2. Kwin Stuttering/Slow

Regarding the stuttering/slowness issues in Kwin, I added the "export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1" line to /etc/profile, which seems to have alleviated some of them, and logout now works - however, I was under the impression this hack wouldn't be needed in KDE 4.6?

Cheers,
Victor

Yep, I got it yesterday

[14:43:44] SS4~ $ kmess -v
Qt: 4.7.1
KDE Development Platform: 4.5.90 (4.6 RC1)
KMess: 2.0.5

(bolded for emphasis)

Is anyone else having KWin taking up a lot of CPU with the non-free nvidia? Nouveau has less trouble with KWin but then X uses about 70% of mycpu

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

I haven't tested what Zephyr proposed about Kwin (which is a workaround, unfortunatelly), but it seems that generally, we have another Kwin version which has problems with the Nvidia driver. Either one or the other should be fixed...

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

I've just tried changing it to 21 and it's taken up about 23% of the CPU. I'll edit this post once mencoder stops using the vast majority of CPU power

edit: It's around ~50% of CPU

I don't think they only mind one particular driver. It's that they could not test Kwin properly on various systems. In this case, Nvidia. In the previous release, ATI (free driver) users had problems which were fixed. There was another case (in KDE 4.2 if I remember well) when the Nvidia driver had serious problems collaborating with Kwin; and it was fixed though (both KDE and Nvidia drivers were updated and it was no longer a problem).

Must be Intel and AMD, because KDE 4.6 RC1 is fine here with radeon-drivers.

Though one of the kwin-developers has a nvidia-card and he already fixed a nvidia-bug in beta 2 or so.

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

heya,

I've upgraded to 4.6 RC1.

The graphics stuttering/stalling issues seem much resolved (Intel GMA 945 graphics), however, I am still unable to suspend my computer (Lenovo X200 tablet), either via the KDE menu, or using the dBus command (see post #207 above). Are other people able to suspend their systems in KDE 4.6 RC1?

Also, when I first logged into 4.6 RC1, I got an error about my soundcard:

KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed.

Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?

This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:

* Capture: HDA Intel (Conexant Analog)
* Output: HDA Intel (CONEXANT Analog)

Yes | No | Manage Devices

Sound *seems* to work, however, I haven't done any extensive testing yet to verify everything. Does anybody know what the effect of this message is, or any idea of what the underlying error is?

I did notice OpenSuse users mentioning sound issues with RC1 as well:

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get- … 6-rc1.html

Finally, in notifications, I have:

The audio playback device HDA Intel (CONEXANT Analog) does not work.
Falling back to Jack Audio Connection Kit.

Cheers,
Victor

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

heya,

Also, another thing I noticed - as a normal user, I can't seem to mount volumes in Dolphin anymore.

When I click on a new volume, I get an error:

An error occured while accessing 'New Volume', the system responded: org.freedesktop.UDisks.Error.PermissionDenied: Not Authorized

I'm a member of the "storage" group - is this a bug, or is there something else I need to do in KDE 4.6 RC1 now? (I'm pretty sure it worked fine in Beta 2).

Cheers,
Victor

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

heya,

Sorry to reply to myself, but read a bit further back in this thread, and saw that a workaround is to edit:

/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy

Adding <allow_any>yes</allow_any> to the mount and eject sections seems to have fixed this issue - i.e. I can mount both internal volumes and external storage now.

However, is this now the default behaviour in KDE 4.6? It seems a bit strange to make users edit this file in order to easily mount removable storage. And I'm sure many people might assume that as long as they were part of the storage group, they should be able to mount things auto-magically. Or will the final packaging of KD 4.6, when its released, have that file modified in order to let normal users mount removable storage?

Thanks,
Victor

Re: [kde-unstable] KDE 4.6

I should tell you from one of the Kwin devs (Martin Gräßlin), that everyone, who have problems with Nvidia and KWin being slow should report this bug, because he didn't get a bug like this. I can't report it myself, because I haven't installed the KDE testing packages...

Best regards!
