Hate to necropost, but while working on this problem I discovered the workaround, so I figured I should share with my fellow archers...

See the XBMC forum post here for a step by step guide for Ubuntu natty. Simply account for Arch's differences in init structure (and the fact that ir-keytable is part of the v4l-utils package) and it should work.
