I should at that compositing with Cairo-compmgr works, so my videocard does indeed support it on Arch.

If the logs don't shed any light on matters, have you systematically gone through the different solutions for your card/chipset in the Compiz Troubleshooting section of the wiki?

Now that you have mesa-demos installed, it might be a good idea to try some of these options again just in case.

Also, if you don't have any luck there, maybe you should have another look at the installation and configuration process for you driver/Xorg configuration... In my (limited) experience, these sorts of issues can often come down to missing a step in one of these areas.
