Not for me, my kernel core/kernel26 2.6.37.1-1 (base) [installed] and my laptop does not shotdown
Offline
it looks like the last kernel update 2.6.37.1-1 has fixed this issue.

Last Updated: 2011-02-20I've just updated my laptop, and after reboot to the new kernel the shutdown process passed well and nicely turned off as wanted.
Did you try to poweroff and then turn on? For me, the new kernel still poses a problem, if I reboot everything seems fine but if I poweroff the kernel panics still

Hi,
Yes, this morning to test it again I've tried to turn it on, power off and on again while running on the battery only.
Because normaly I'm using the docking station for the whole day, and there was no problem with powering it off before and after this kernel update while running on the docking station.
And it powered off normally as at my previous reply. Before this kernel update it didn't powered off, and I was forced to turn it off manually using the power button.
My laptop is HP Compaq 6510b.
Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Happened once yesterday, thinkpad t410s, 2.6.37-1

I'm not using testing but this happens to me sometimes, hangs at restarting system, using latest stable kernel and KDE 4.6 (without HAL)

This is still happening to me after today's kernel upgrade "upgraded kernel26 (2.6.37.1-1 -> 2.6.37.2-1)". Does anyone still have this issue? It is really annoying, specially when i forget about it and put my laptop in my bag... And it will only power down when battery runs out or temperatures goes up.

@molecula21
Same issue here with HP laptop dv6700 running kernel 2.6.37.2-1.

Same issue here with HP laptop 6910p running kernel 2.6.37.2-1. It is so strange, that this bug has been so looong...

I have downgraded to kernel26-2.6.35.8-1 and surprisingly here the same issue, my laptop doesn't power down. It worked properly with this kernel before, so maybe it is not the kernel issue?

A shot in the dark: maybe something related to USB. I always had to strugle with some USB3 device to be able to suspend (which now i cannot). Where can i see what's happening at shutdown? Is there any log somewhere? my /var/log/messages shows this as the last event just before i force shutdown:
Mar 5 02:32:04 localhost NetworkManager[1629]: <info> (eth0): taking down device.
I dont think this gives any relevant information though....

My logs end with eth0 coming offline, then syslog terminating... I would say this is normal. When the shutdown hangs (still doing that here on 2.6.37.2-zen-01992-g9f7c5a1), the bootsplash that I run has some text about unmounting encrypted filesystems. It could just be saying that and not really mean anything... I don't have any encrypted fs for it to unmount anyways.

I am getting the same message about unmounted encrypted filesystems although my home directory is encrypted. IIRC, the shutdown problem started BEFORE this error message started showing up (probably a different bug).

After trying many things I have found out a trick. It is not a solution but it helps to power off the computer correctly, at least for me. Try to remove laptop-mode-tools from the daemons array in /etc/rc.conf.
Offline
I confirm what nnoel said. I removed the laptop-mode daemon from the DAEMONS list in the /etc/rc.conf my laptop powered down just fine. I also tried the following: start the daemon anyway in the rc.conf at startup; stop the daemon (sudo /etc/rc.d/laptop-mode stop); shut down the laptop. The problem still happens this way. Something really strange is happening when the laptop-mode daemon is started... Anyway, this might help a lot. At least we know what's causing the problem...

Removing of the laptop-mode daemon helps also for me.

Might be related to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22957
Instead of disabling laptop-mode completely, try to remove newest modules in /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d (ls -ltru to list them)

I looked up at the bug report you pointed. Are you suggesting to disable the following modules in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf one by one?
# ac97-powersave
# cpufreq
# dpms-standby
# eee-superhe
# ethernet
# exec-commands
# hal-polling
# hdparm
# intel-hda-powersave
# intel-sata-powermgmt
# runtime-pm
# sched-mc-power-savings
# sched-smt-power-savings
# terminal-blanking
# usb-autosuspend
# wireless-ipw-power
# wireless-iwl-power
# wireless-power
And see which one/ones triggers the problem? this might be a good approach (a tedious one, but a good one nevertheless). I dont have the time right now to test this, anyone with available time for 18 reboots?

No, just the ones that have been updated recently (hence the ls -ltruh).
I've installed my system in August and the latest laptop-mode update was IIRC on February 15th
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.7K Aug 5 2010 auto-hibernate.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 803 Aug 5 2010 ac97-powersave.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 858 Aug 6 2010 wireless-power.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 914 Aug 6 2010 wireless-ipw-power.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 963 Aug 6 2010 wireless-iwl-power.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.7K Feb 18 22:41 usb-autosuspend.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2.4K Feb 19 12:22 ethernet.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 953 Mar 4 12:51 bluetooth.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 929 Mar 4 17:49 runtime-pm.conf
I've disabled ethernet.conf and runtime-pm.conf

Nice one the workaround provided by LeCrayonVert worked for me. All my *.conf were dated from today (since i already made a -Syu in the morning) so i would have to go through all the modules in the list. Thank you for pointing me the modules to disable. Summarizing, to temporarily solve the problem go to /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/ethernet.conf and /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/runtime-pm.conf and change the control variable to "0".

Sorry to burst the bubble but the issue is still present for me with latest kernel and acer extensa 5620, and I don't even have laptop-mode stuff installed.

For me the problem is solved after kernel upgrade to .38. My laptop shuts down normally again.
