Qt is GPL already.
The point is that any open source initiative without commercial implementations is much less likely to succeed in the long run.

I really want to see Qt acquired by Google and then open-soured like VP8.
they can also use Qt to work on android or chrome os too.
How is Qt not open source? It's LGPL.
EDIT: Aha, forgot to refresh.. slow

I don't get the point. Qt has been around several years and, from my point of view, has always been successful. The company behind Qt is making profit with licensing and a major desktop environment uses it. Google focuses on applications that run in a browser - preferably theirs - and thus has little need for a cross-plattform toolkit. I'd be happy to see a smartphone or mobile computer running Meego in it's stock configuration, but I doubt to see it happen before the end of 2011, if at all.

It's a real shame though that they didn't focus on Maemo/MeeGo better, if they'd invested more than the supposed 3 external people working on it they could have had a real competitive product by now. They would still have a problem marketing the ecosystem then though, since all this open source stuff is great but you also need (a lot of) people willing to make really good (paid) apps.
Then again the great thing about it is that you can just take any of the thousands of existing linux apps, edit the interface if needed, and release it. My n900 runs stellarium, conky, espeak, firefox, opera, mypaint, mplayer, vlc, vim, xterm and file-roller just to name a few. If you are willing to use a desktop interface you can run gimp and openoffice... That is a huge advantage you can gain by using available applications and releasing them for free.

GTK doesn't have a commercial developer and they're doing just fine.
Quite frankly, I don't see any issue here.
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.
