Re: USB 3.0 not working

I've been having troubles with USB 3.0 as well, and posted a bug on the kernel's bugzilla page. (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34202) A patch was posted elsewhere for a similar issue, and was merged into 3.0-rc1, 2.6.38.8 and 2.6.39.1. I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but updating to one of those versions may fix your problems.

Re: USB 3.0 not working

I've updated to 2.6.39.1 from [testing] repo, and it has not fixed the problem, without or with pci=nomsi on the grub kernel line. This may be different for the Fresco chip, so someone with it should test too.

Re: USB 3.0 not working

Now on 2.6.39.1 from core repo.  I don't need the patch to get the Asus wmi stuff working anymore, which is nice, as I can use a stock Arch kernel again.  However, I still need pci=nomsi to get the Fresco USB3 to work.

Re: USB 3.0 not working

2.6.29.2 now, no need for pci=nomsi anymore, LCD backlight adjustment stopped working with 2.6.39.1 and .2, I've not looked into it, but I'm betting it's an easy fix.

Re: USB 3.0 not working

Unfortunately, the USB 3.0 controller on your machine is different from mine, so it's not working yet on my laptop. sad

Re: USB 3.0 not working

I was looking around on the net, and I'm pretty sure the NEC controller was supposed to be the one supported back in 2009! Is that correct? If so, this is pretty dodge that it still doesn't work.

Re: USB 3.0 not working

Could this be a firmware issue?
Googling around I have found that even Windows users had a lot of problems with this NEC controller with old firmware. Unfortunately you can flash a new firmware only under Windows and I wiped my XP install on the affected server box just a few days earlier and my desktop box with still a Windows 7 install doesn't have a free slot to plug the card in temporarily to flash it.

But that doesn't change how the firmware of the card interacts with the OS specific driver code in Linux, doesn't it? I know I am only grasping at straws and guessing altogether, but surely this NEC  chipset should work in Linux for a while now; and probably does for many, but not for me. sad

Re: USB 3.0 not working

Mine works fine in windows too. I doubt old firmware on the card is the issue. This really feels ridiculous that it won't work.

Has anyone tried this on the new 3.0 kernel yet?

Re: USB 3.0 not working

Yes, even before it became stable. Still no luck.:(
But I tried another USB-3.0 hard disk in the meantime, a WD 2,5" model and it actually showed up fine in 'dmesg'. I just couldn't mount it as user under gnome due to permission problems and since I had to give it back to my brother immediately I didn't bother further. But like I said, it at least did show up. Maybe some chipset revisions are just not compatible between each other.

Re: USB 3.0 not working

Hi everyone,

I have a StarTech 2 Port PCI Express SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter Model PEXUSB3S2
(NEC Corporation uPD720200) with a USB 3.0 Iomega Prestige 2TB attached.

Which worked when i had the 2.26.39 Kernel installed.
However, since updating to the version 3.0 Kernel, the hard drive is no longer
showing in Nautilus.

Re: USB 3.0 not working

That's interesting it was working for you, as my card with the same chipset was not. However, I only had one USB3.0 drive to test with it. Maybe the drives are the problems after all, but then, how could that be, if my drive works on my windows computer with onboard USB3.0, and through the USB3.0 PCI Express card?

Re: USB 3.0 not working

On an EliteBook 8560w I had to :
rmmod xhci_hcd
and  then
modprobe xhci_hcd
with my devices connected to the USB3.0 ports otherwise they don't work, of course I've to redo the same manipulation in case I remove the device and plug in it again..

Re: USB 3.0 not working

USB 3.0 now appears to be working fine with the NEC chipset. A quick test (copy file from USB 3.0 drive to tmpfs) ran at ~150MB/s. This is without pci=nomsi in the grub kernel line. Here is the kernel version and relevant dmesg output:

I do load xhci_hcd in my MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf if that makes a difference. I don't know what the errors/WARNs mean but the device appears to be working happily.

linux-atm 2.5.1-2
linux-firmware 20110822-1
