Also, does anyone know if it's possible to get the old Applications/Places/System menu?

The closest I've seen is the places extension, which felt a little clunky to me.

I use AWN with the cairo menu applet as a replacement (but I hate not having a permanently visible dock, anyway).

That seems to be for those using gnome-shell no? I already have a Places menu in fallback mode, only the System one is missing (it has been moved). And it's not that I really need it, it's just Gnome 2 nostalgia ;-)

Ah you're right, sorry. I overlooked the, "without shell," part up there.

1. Turning off gnome-shell is easy and can be done in system settings.

Hi, could you please give exact intruction for that? is it forced fallback mode ? I want to avoid forced fallback mode because seems it turning off the hardware acceleration (cmiiw). I tried not to install the gnome-shell but it causes some errors on gnome-session (like gnome-shell not found).

thx.. smile

This is a really old thread, it might have been better to start a new one. but anyway...

Forced-fallback does not disable H/W acceleration - it disables Gnome-Shell. ie: i use compiz (which requires 3d acceleration) with Gnome-Fallback.

system settings -> Details -> graphics -> forced fallback.
