Hy,
I had this problem too. I installed official drivers Brother drivers, a2ps and addedblacklist usblp
to /etc/modprobe.d/
This fixed the problem.
Which drivers from the Brother homepage did you install in detail?
I downloaded and installed the ppd files but the printer isn't recognized and if I enter the url "usb://Brother/DCP8040" and select the correct driver, it doesn't print. I tried the cups-wrapper from AUR before and tried blacklisting usblp in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf alread without success.

In /etc/modprobe.d/ I put new file 'usblp_blacklist.conf'. I no changed modprobe.conf. I have brother DCP- J125 and I installed 'LPR driver', 'cupswrapper driver' ... rpm file, I use rpmextract. In package 'cupswrapper driver' is script 'cupswrapperdcpj125'. It install drivers and printer in cups.
