Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I've got a reasonably fast server (VPS) with unlimited traffic so if you are still looking for a mirror I would like to help!

Finalmente eso es un proyecto que me gusta! Excelente trabajo!

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Well, I really like the idea of MATE, but I think a proper project website is needed in order to start some serious efforts.

If there is no plan for a website already, I will be willing to start one + maintain it...

Just in case anybody is interested, my mirror is located at ftp://tridex.net/mate , contains all packages for i686 and x86_64 and updates on a daily basis from matusoft.com.ar.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Another server, excellent, that will ease the strain a little.
Well done schneida.

Just updated the germ.winpe.com server.

I now have wget and rsync doing the work but it can still take a while sometimes.

Clive.

Just installed the new version and it seems fine so far, excellent work.

It didn't upgrade from my germ.winpe.com server with a -Syu though, I had to manually install with a pacman -U

Now a -Syu produces this output...
:: Starting full system upgrade...
warning: mate-file-manager: local (2011.11.10-1) is newer than mate (2011.10.29-2)
there is nothing to do

Is the mate db not updated or could this be a mistake I am making somewhere with the copy of the repo on my server?

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

@clpc: How are you mirroring the repo via rsync, that is how do you instruct it to mirror a http server?

I'm using pacman with a special config to download every package of the mate repository and then download the db files manually:
pacman --config /etc/pacman.conf.mate64 -Syddw $(pacman --config /etc/pacman.conf.mate64 -Slq)
wget ....

Hi schneida,

I use wget to grab just what has changed like this...
wget --tries=50 -c --read-timeout=60 --level=1 -r --no-parent -R.html -e robots=off http://matsusoft.com.ar/repository/arch … te/x86_64/

then I rsync my local copy with my server like this...
rsync -av --progress --rsh='ssh -p35' /home/clive/data/mate/matsusoft.com.ar/repository/archlinux/mate/x86_64/* userx@germ.winpe.com:/home/winpe/www/archlinux/mate/x86_64-new/

Note that I rsync up to a dir called x86_64-new and when all is done I just mv the dirs to the correct names.

Am I doing something wrong?
Up until this last update I was using aria to download everything and uploading with the mate file manager caja.

Clive

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Hello there, I am searching a hosting to put mate debian packages. A mirror one, with ftp access to update it quickly.
If interested, connect to freenode irc #mate.

Thankyou

EDIT: we got one

You should really set up a community website and mailing-list, if you want other people to help you...

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

@Perberos: mate-bluetooth is missing in the repo for i686 but listed as a package in the mate.db. Please either remove it from the repo file or upload that package (otherwise my mirror script fails)

A community website should really be a priority to provide a central place for all kind of information about the project. If you need someone to host it (or a domain), just contact me!

This. I find coordination and organization lacking atm.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I prefer work on each existing community website. And use github/freenode as meeting point.
about mailing list, I still do not know which to use. (I was thinking on sf.net)

on next 3 days, I am going to do a massive compile for both arch.

Ok I've signed up for the mailing list, will be installing this Monday on an arch laptop at work. I can't code but will report bugs as I come across them.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I'm still getting the same caja crashes in MATE 64 bit - It loads fine, but I when move to another folder it crashes (sorry no bug report, i loaded it with terminator and displayed nothing after the crash), and what happened to mate-terminal? It isn't in the repos anymore. I had to log out and hit Ctrl+ALT+F2 and the slim login screen to install terminator. A lot panel applets seem to be missing too.

Also, you should add tcp_wrappers into the repos. It keeps failing to install mate-extras (mate-display-manager). I had to install it from the AUR for it to actually work and even with that it only installed mate-display-manager. Nothing else.

tcp_wrappers are deprecated, it's probably better to rewrite mate-extras to work without them.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Well, if they are rewriting mate-extras that would explain why stuff is missing. Should I remove tcp_wrappers?

Well, http://www.archlinux.org/news/dropping- … s-support/

So yeah, it might be a good idea, since even if things work right now, that might not always be the case.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I've just started work on packaging MATE for Fedora.  For the mate-corba package, what release number should I use?  1.0? 2.0? 2.14.something?

I'll have the same problem for other packages, so any guidance will be appreciated.

Thanks!
Eric

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

I thought fans of Mate and Gnome 2 might be interested in Fuduntu, which I just read about. I haven't tried it yet.

www.fuduntu.org

It's a rolling release based on Fedora 14, which claims they will stick with Gnome 2 as long as possible. Along with Linux Mint's involvement now in the Mate project it's nice to see that serious interest in maintaining the Gnome 2 desktop environment is continuing to build.

Just ditched evince-gtk for mate-document-viewer but when I open a PDF it says it's an unsupported file type.

Re: Mate Desktop Environment - GNOME2 fork

Attempting to run mate-document-viewer (now called atril) after the most recent update on the repos causes a segmentation fault. As well, mate-text-editor is stated to be missing from the repo (http://germ.winpe.com/archlinux/mate/$arch) by pacman if I attempt to upgrade it and similar messsages on the other repos.
