Actually, GTK is GIMP. And even GIMP hasn't upgraded to GTK 3. It should, though.
You can install gimp-git and switch the branch to the gtk3 one.

There's also gimp-devel in extra which uses gtk3.
E: Oh, actually it doesn't. Sorry.

Yeah, I've been using gimp-devel for a while, now. What I meant was that it doesn't have GTK 3 yet. A lot of programs are working on it, though. Especially because of the reduced X11 requirements, so that things can easily be ported to wayland.

Sorry for posting it again. I do not want to go on your nerves, but I have problems with shut-down and I did not find anything about problems with the mate-desktop and shut-down-workarounds, neither in the forums, nor in the wiki. I am able to log out of my session into gdm-old, but my shut-down-Button from the panel is greyed out and there is also no Button in my menu to shut-down. Is this normal? Or does this Button work for all of you? What can I do now? (I know that I can do sudo halt in the terminal, but that kind of sucks in my opinion).
edit:Solved! Switched to lightdm and now it seems to work! Thank you anyway! From now on MATE is the greatest desktop-environment! Perberos, your name will be written in the history books! What you've done is f*cking awesome!

lol It's like trowing pie in the faces of the gnome developers.
They have betrayed us with there garbage gnome shell. Brilliant work from Perberos brining the desktop back.
Gnome 2 is the best desktop! I still don't understand why the gnome developers had to change it.
It would be good revenge when Mate gets more users than gnome after it's in other repositories.

Two-finger scrolling is greyed out in the mouse/touchpad preferences after dumping Gnome 3 for Mate. Also my function keys (screen brightness, etc.) don't seem to work...

That was normal even for when gnome 2 was in the repos. You get just the main stuff to get it working, this isn't like ubuntu that gives you everything.

Speaking of Clearlooks, I have gtk-engines installed but Clearlooks still doesn't exist. Weird.

I was able to get two-finger scrolling working by changing the value of /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/scroll_method to 2 (although the option is still greyed out in the GUI mouse/touchpad prefs.

This is wonderful
But my bottom panel is blank. I have to alt-tab to switch between my running applications.
For those having problems with clearlooks be sure to restart Mate after installing the gtk-engine packages.
Hope this project grows and doesn't die off. I miss Gnome2

May I suggest making a real "mate" logo for the desktop environment?

@Perberos: Have you thought about using Nautilus Elementary instead of forking the old "official" one? Also the Ubuntu notification system (notify-osd) instead of the standard Gnome 2 popups would be cool

Has anyone been able to get Compiz working with native (as in Metacity/Marco) window decoration? I have it configured to use gtk-window-decorator but I'm getting weird borders...also Alt+F1 and Alt+F2 don't work while Compiz is running (part of the Gnome options in CCSM).

You will have to recompile compiz-decorator-gtk and tell it to use Marco. The build in the repository simply won't work and you'll be stuck with Cairo decorations because it has no idea that Metacity is installed on your system as Marco.
I have attempted to recompile it but I've not made much progress. All I've been able to do so far is ensure that it knows that Marco is the window manager. To do this I've simply added the following before ./configure in the PKGBUILD:
export METACITY_CFLAGS='-I/usr/include/marco-1/marco-private/ -I/usr/include/libmate-2.0'
export METACITY_LIBS='-llibmarco-private -llibmate-2 -llibmateui'
Some of that may be unnecessary, I'm not sure. Sure enough, passing those variables will result in ./configure being able to locate 'metacity'.
This is the error that the build fails on:
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../.. -I../../include -pthread -I/usr/include/gtk-2.0 -I/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/include -I/usr/include/atk-1.0 -I/usr/include/cairo -I/usr/include/gdk-pixbuf-2.0 -I/usr/include/pango-1.0 -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -I/usr/include/pixman-1 -I/usr/include/freetype2 -I/usr/include/libpng14 -I/usr/include/libwnck-1.0 -I/usr/include/startup-notification-1.0 -I/usr/include/marco-1/marco-private/ -I/usr/include/libmate-2.0 -DORBIT2=1 -pthread -I/usr/include/gconf/2 -I/usr/include/orbit-2.0 -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -pthread -I/usr/include/dbus-1.0 -I/usr/lib/dbus-1.0/include -I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -DALL_LINGUAS="\"af ar bg bn bn_IN bs ca cs cy da de el en_GB en_US es eu et fi fr gl gu he hi hr hu id it ja ka km ko lo lt mk mr nb nl or pa pl pt pt_BR ro ru sk sl sr sv ta tr uk vi xh zh_CN zh_TW zu\"" -DLOCALEDIR="\"/usr/share/locale"\" -march=x86-64 -mtune=generic -O2 -pipe -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -Wall -Wpointer-arith -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations -Wnested-externs -MT gtk-window-decorator.o -MD -MP -MF .deps/gtk-window-decorator.Tpo -c -o gtk-window-decorator.o gtk-window-decorator.c

I did install gtk-window-decorator-no-gnome from the AUR and edited the PKGBUILD to depend on mate-window-manager instead of metacity. I reinstalled it after removing metacity so it would compile without looking for it. Tried adding those lines to the PKGBUILD and symlinked /usr/include/marco-1/marco-private to include/metacity-private in the srcdir with the same results.

also Alt+F1 and Alt+F2 don't work while Compiz is running (part of the Gnome options in CCSM).
This doesn't work with GNOME 3, either. As a temporary fix for alt-F2, you could add a binding for Alt-F2 in compiz, but I don't know what the command for the dialogue in mate is. It's xfrun4 if you have Xfce installed.

It basically does already -- it's just been rebranded as "Marco" to differentiate it from the official Gnome version, as with some other core applications.

Thank u I didn't see that It was called Marco.
Lol that's why I couldn't find it in gconf-editor but now im using mateconf-editor.
Mate has some bugs but it works fine I had some problems with polkit and also the volume sound package is not there.
Also when deleting files it doesn't move to the trash I hope it get's fixed perhaps it has something to do with dbus.

Beware. This is the reason: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 44#p984844
1. Download compiz-0.8.8.tar.gz at http://matsusoft.com.ar/uploads/gnu-linux/mate/compiz/ and extract.
2. Compile
configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --disable-static
make
su -c"make install"
3. Run ccsm and activate add-ons, mate compatibility, window decorator, etc. Except the "MateConf". You are warned.
4. Activate compiz with fusion-icon and select GTK Window Decorator.
